Australian painters John Glover (1767-1849), Australian landscape with cattle: the artist's property Patterdale, c. 1835, oil on canvas. Image courtesy of the : an2253188. When the first artists arrived in colonial Australia from Europe in the late 18th century, they were confronted by images and scenery the likes of which they had never seen: ...the whole appearance of nature must be striking in the extreme to the adventurer, and at first this will seem to him to be a country of enchantments.Thomas Watling, Letters From An Exile in Botany Bay, To His Aunt in Dumfries, 1794 The traditions of European art and painting did not fit comfortably with this strange and bewildering new landscape. Early artists tended to paint what they saw and the better the representation; the better the work was regarded. The new landscape John Glover was one of the precursors of an Australian style of painting. His body of work made him a pioneer of landscape painting in Australia. Friendship | First Fleet Fellowship Victoria Inc Friendship Convict transport ship (Marine artist Frank Allen) Friendship was a convict transport ship of 276 tons, which was built in Scarborough England, in 1784, for her owners Hoppers of Scarborough. Aboard on the voyage to Botany Bay, were the Master, Captain Francis Walton, Assistant Surgeon Thomas Arnell and Marines, Captain James Meredith, Lieutenant Ralph Clark, and Lieutenant William. On 5 July 1787, Captain Walton gave Ralph Clark a puppy that Clark called ‘Efford’ after the place where he became acquainted with his beloved wife Alicia. ‘Efford’ was not the only dog lost overboard, as Captain Meredith lost his dog ‘Shot’ on 30 September, making him the fifth dog that had been lost overboard since the Fleet left England. Friendship entered Botany Bay on 19 January 1788 together with the other transports. On Wednesday 30 January the Governor’s store of twenty-three sheep and five lambs, with other stock was landed from Fishburn and Friendship. Bradley recorded their departure.

National Treasures – Endeavour Journal (2004 Clip description Written on board the Endeavour during his trip down under in 1770, James Cook’s journal records the beginning of Australia as we know it today. Curator’s notes Captain James Cook FRS RN (27 October 1728–14 February 1779) was an English explorer, navigator and cartographer. James Cook was the first European explorer to chart the east coast of Australia. Initially, I was drawn more to Cook’s voyages than to Cook himself. But as I began to research the captain’s voyages, I became just as entranced by Cook the man. Memory of Cook varies a great deal from country to country. The sad truth is that Cook’s discoveries paved the way for whalers, traders, colonialists, missionaries and others who dispossessed native peoples, destroyed their cultures and belief systems, and despoiled the environment. Cook was open and tolerant, and willing to learn from unfamiliar cultures — he admired their non-materialism and their respect for the environment.

Joseph Banks' Endeavour Journal Joseph Banks (1743-1820) successfully lobbied the Royal Society to be included on what became James Cook's first great voyage of discovery, on board the Endeavour (1768 - 1771). This voyage marked the beginning of Banks' lifelong friendship and collaboration with the Swedish naturalist Daniel Solander, and his indefatigable advocacy of British settlement in NSW. The Endeavour's stay in a wide, shallow bay south of the present day Sydney from 28 April to 5 May 1770, yielded so many previously unrecorded specimens to Bank's botanical collections that Cook named the area 'Botany Bay'. For the rest of his life, Banks influenced almost every aspect of Pacific exploration and early Australian colonial life. The journal kept by the then 25-year-old Joseph Banks on board HMS Endeavour is one of the Library's most significant manuscripts. > Read the complete journal via the Library's catalogue Page header reads: 'New South Wales' 23. 24. 25. 26. 27.
