Fine Art of an Icelandic Volcano Eruption (10 photos) In 2010, Iceland experienced an epic volcanic eruption that captured the attention of people worldwide. Eyjafjallajökull spewed ash into the air as experts warned that the tiny particles of rock, glass and sand contained in the ash cloud was sufficient to jam aircraft engines. European air traffic was at a standstill for weeks. While most saw the natural disaster as a huge inconvenience, Swedish landscape and aerial photographer Hans Strand saw it as an opportunity. Interestingly, Strand was able to capture the volcano with such crispness and clarity that after the initial processing, where he corrected the color balance, he performed no further editing. Update: We got in touch with Strand to ask him more about this very unique experience. What made you decide to pursue photography as your full-time career? You were a mechanical engineer for 9 years before you became a photographer. What was it like shooting the volcano from the sky? Thanks for the interview, Hans! Hans Strand's website

Beautiful Planet - Oh I so want to go to the ISS! Indian Ocean Maldives “The sunny side of life” is a catchphrase used to attract tourists to the Maldive Islands. Well it certainly looks heavenly from the ISS. Time to order a large drink, you know, one with a lot of fruit and a little umbrella, then stretch out on a hammock and just enjoy life, watching what I can only imagine a marvelous sunset. I for one am very pleased that the astronauts on the ISS (heroes in my humble opinion) keep sharing images of our beautiful planet with the rest of us. The real kick is, we’ve seen images like this before, created in special effect studios in Hollywood. [34 pictures] Hint: Use “J” and “K” keys to navigate from picture to picture. Even a lower PoV would have been fine. jonathan_hart hello Elaine very nice place, excellent composition, a pity that's tilted to the right regards jo Royaldevon Hello Elaine, I think this is fabulous. andante Peaceful, well balanced, the horizon line looks tilted, but it could be an optical illusion because of the perspective. KevRyan bw Kev ben4321 This bridge and it's reflection make a great subject, but I think the shot would have worked better if you could have taken it from further to the right and maybe a bit higher up in order to have some separation between the reflection and the river bank. The Rise of Infographics collected by @themadray | Designerscouch #thecritiquenetwork The Hamilton Pool Nature Preserve in Texas Oct 3, 2011 Located approximately 30 miles (48 km) southwest of Austin, Texas, the Hamilton Pool Preserve is a historic swimming hole which was designated a preserve by the Travis County Commissioner’s Court in 1990. Located 3/4 mile upstream from its confluence with the Pedernales River, Hamilton Creek spills out over limestone outcroppings to create a 50 foot waterfall as it plunges into the head of a steep box canyon. The waterfall never completely dries up, but in dry times it does slow to a trickle. The preserve is home to the Golden-Cheeked Warbler, and a great variety of other birds. A unique natural area surrounds this pool, collapsed grotto and canyon, formed by thousands of years of water erosion.
