One of the reasons why Google has consistently released new innovative project is because of their 20% time policy, which gives many of their employees one day a week to experiment with new concepts and ideas. This has resulted in many lesser-known creative projects that have emerged from within Googleplex. In this post, I want to show you some of most fascinating websites that Google employees have created and how you can use them as educational tools. 1. I have that feeling of being somewhat overwhelmed, I can’t twist and turn any more, it simply will not go away. Do I throw myself off the building or decide to listen a little longer? It really is forcing me to think. Today it seems whenever I pick up a business book each chapter has a section on it. What am I talking about? Design thinking is a mindset If we believe we can make a difference and even have gone that one step further, many never seem to get there, where we have an intentional process to get us to new relevant solutions that do actually create a positive impact. Someone has talked me off the ledge, I give in and I want that embracing mindset You are a work-in-progress of forward momentum. So I’ve come off the ledge, have you? What will design thinking get you? So what does this Design Thinking process look like? (Image source: IDEO) So we need to start learning how to put this design thinking into more everyday practice These are: Like this:

Keith Burgun's Blog - Violence, Part 2: Game Design Ramifications The following blog post, unless otherwise noted, was written by a member of Gamasutra’s community. The thoughts and opinions expressed are those of the writer and not Gamasutra or its parent company. In Part 1, I discussed the cultural and messaging problems involved with portraying the glorification of violence. I do not advocate "starting with theme" - you should certainly not start a game design out by saying something like "Three heroic warriors travel into the Grundendo Forest to find the Enchanted Obelisk and destroy the evil villain Sorcerer Johns." With that said, it's useful to at least use small, loose bits of theme, especially during a game's earliest design phases. Today, I want to talk about the negative ramifications of working with a violence-themed base. Directness Games are at their least interesting when interactions are direct. You could potentially balance all three of those examples, so that they weren't more or less effective overall than other options. Conclusion

Why We Created Value Proposition Design — Strategyzer Integration with Customer Development and Lean Startup Business Model Generation was published before we learned about the Customer Development Process by Steve Blank and the Lean Startup by Eric Ries. That is the only reason why they are not featured in the first book. Our new book was the opportunity to conceptualize, synthesize, and visualize the intersection between Design Thinking, Business Model Generation, Customer Development, and Lean Startup in a way that is simple to understand and apply. In Value Proposition Design we dedicate an entire chapter to the testing of business models and value propositions and outline several new practical tools and processes that make testing an even more systematic, practical endeavor. For example, the Test Card helps you design (Lean Startup) experiments to validate or invalidate the assumptions underlying your business model or value proposition.

Advanced Warfare review By Graham Smith on November 5th, 2014 at 7:00 pm. The Call of Duty games are often best understood not as first-person shooters in the lineage of Half-Life 2 and Halo, but as extensions of light-gun rail shooters. They’re games set in strictly scripted corridors, with one button to pop in and out of cover, one to shoot, and another to reload. That you can move your legs around a bit hardly matters, and taken on these terms, the entries in the series which lean towards boyish action romp are at least lightly entertaining. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare resists even these acts of apologia. Those exosuits are introduced early and are the product of Atlas, a near-future private military company run by Jonathan Irons, played by marquee signing Kevin Spacey. Not that the story matters much. At the very least, the story dodges much of the unpleasant jingoism that marks the worst of the previous Call of Duty games. Of course, it doesn’t work out that way. It is as it ever was, of course.

A Brief History of Blogging Blogs have become an integral part of online culture. Practically everyone reads blogs now, whether they’re “official” news blogs associated with traditional news media, topic-based blogs related to one’s work or hobbies, or blogs purely for entertainment, just about anyone you ask has at least one favorite blog. But it wasn’t always so. Blogs have a relatively short history, even when compared with the history of the Internet itself. And it’s only in the past five to ten years that they’ve really taken off and become an important part of the online landscape. The Early Years It’s generally recognized that the first blog was Links.net, created by Justin Hall, while he was a Swarthmore College student in 1994. It wasn’t until 1997 that the term “weblog” was coined. 1998 marks the first known instance of a blog on a traditional news site, when Jonathan Dube blogged Hurricane Bonnie for The Charlotte Observer. “Weblog” was shortened to “blog” in 1999 by programmer Peter Merholz.

The Latest Cool Gifts, Apparel and Gadgets Andrzej Marczewski's Blog - Game Mechanics in Gamification – Revisited The following blog post, unless otherwise noted, was written by a member of Gamasutra’s community. The thoughts and opinions expressed are those of the writer and not Gamasutra or its parent company. Many moons ago I wrote about a massive misunderstanding in gamification around game mechanics and what they actually are. There were several lists around that said they were key game mechanics, which turned out to be very little to do with actual mechanics. Fast forward almost 2 years and, well it is getting better, but there is still a lot of people getting it confused. A distinct set of rules that dictate the outcome of interactions within the system. So if we take shooting in Space Invaders. Input: User hits fire Process / rules: Bullet speed, bullet vector, position of enemy Output: Miss, nothing. Some started to use the phrase Gamification mechanic, to get around this problem. Input: Well, it doesn’t really have one. Ok, that was hard! “User hits fire”. I have changed my mind a little.
