Leading From Behind Ezra Klein endorses my understanding of how Obama sees his presidency: When presidents succeed in presiding over great change, they do so by recognizing an existing opportunity, not squeezing one from the stone of existing opposition. Obama correctly saw that 60 Democrats in the Senate and 240 in the House had cleared the way for health-care reform. Bush realized that 9/11 opened the door for the Iraq War. Clinton understood that the preferences of the Republican Congress and the economic growth of the ’90s created space for a Democrat to balance the budget and reform welfare. Reagan sensed that stagnation had prepared the American people for a radically different economic philosophy. This is temperamental conservatism as Burke would understand it. At a fundraising dinner in 2008, in Montclair, New Jersey, Obama told one of his favorite stories about F.D.R.

Improving efficiency in higher education is crucial to long-term economic growth in the U.S. Therefore, it’s encouraging to see governors taking the issue seriously and advocating the use of enhanced metrics to guide funding decisions and to measure student outcomes so that cost-effective universities can be rewarded through the state appropriations process. At least four of Gov. Virginia is hardly the only state where board appointments are given out as political patronage. In fact, sometimes the political meddling goes even further.

The Dish | By Andrew Sullivan - The Daily Beast Social network Social networks and the analysis of them is an inherently interdisciplinary academic field which emerged from social psychology, sociology, statistics, and graph theory. Georg Simmel authored early structural theories in sociology emphasizing the dynamics of triads and "web of group affiliations."[2] Jacob Moreno is credited with developing the first sociograms in the 1930s to study interpersonal relationships. These approaches were mathematically formalized in the 1950s and theories and methods of social networks became pervasive in the social and behavioral sciences by the 1980s.[1][3] Social network analysis is now one of the major paradigms in contemporary sociology, and is also employed in a number of other social and formal sciences. Together with other complex networks, it forms part of the nascent field of network science.[4][5] Overview[edit] History[edit] Levels of analysis[edit] Self-organization of a network, based on Nagler, Levina, & Timme, (2011)[32] Micro level[edit]

William Manning, "A Laborer," Explains Shays Rebellion in Massachusetts: "In as Plain a Manner as I Am Capable" The end of the War of Independence in 1783 curtailed wartime loss of life and destruction of property. However, peace also brought economic distress through cycles of depression and glut. These cycles were exacerbated when Massachusetts authorities pursued strict policies on money and debt and British creditors called in their debts during the post-Revolutionary depression. When merchants turned to already pressured farmers and rural traders who had no cash to pay their debts or taxes, courts and jails filled with debtors. In protest, Daniel Shays, a former captain in the revolutionary militia, led an uprising in western and central Massachusetts to close the courts and prevent the seizure of property for unpaid debts. Massachusetts Governor Bowdoin sent a military force that scattered the rebels. Under all these circumstances, the people were driven to the greatest extremity. But the suppression was done with the loss of but few lives. Laborer
