After a rash of declassifications, details of Cold War workings at the Nevada base, which to this day does not officially exist, are coming to light—including never before released images of an A-12 crash and its cover-up. Area 51 was created so that U.S. Cold Warriors with the highest security clearances could pursue cutting-edge aeronautical projects away from prying eyes. Nearly undetectable to radar, the A-12 could fly at 2,200 miles an hour (3,540 kilometers an hour)—fast enough to cross the continental U.S. in 70 minutes. But pushing the limits came with risks—and a catastrophic 1963 crash of an A-12 based out of Area 51. A rapid government cover-up removed nearly all public traces of the wrecked A-12—pictured publicly for the first time in this gallery, thanks to the CIA's recent declassification of the images.

Models of how polar-ring galaxies form offer two general formation scenarios: 1) a piercing merger between two galaxies aligned roughly at right angles, or 2) when the host galaxy tidally strips material from a passing gas-rich spiral and strews it into a ring. What you see in this new Gemini Legacy image, then, is not a single dynamic body but either the “bloody” aftermath of one galaxy piercing the heart of another or the remains of a furious tidal struggle between two galaxies that shattered one galaxy’s "lamp," scattered its dust and gas, and formed a colorful, 40,000-light-year-long ring of visual glory. The Universal Packing List Un mystérieux rayonnement cosmique gravé dans les cernes d'arbres Publiant leurs travaux le 3 juin dans Nature, des chercheurs nippons ont découvert, dans les anneaux de croissance d’arbres centenaires, un taux de carbone 14 qui ne peut qu’avoir été consécutif à un rayonnement cosmique intense survenu en 774 ou en 775 après J.-C., et dont l’origine et la nature restent inconnues. L’équipe de Fusa Miyake, de l'Université de Nagoya, au Japon, a analysé la composition isotopique de deux cèdres du Japon centenaires et trouvé, dans les anneaux de croissance correspondant aux années 774 et 775, un taux de carbone 14 supérieur d’environ 1,2 % à la normale, qui ne peut s’expliquer, selon eux, que par un mystérieux événement cosmique, ayant eu sur ces arbres un effet 20 fois supérieur à celui des pics normaux de l’activité solaire. Ces données confirment celles recueillies antérieurement sur des arbres d’Europe et d’Amérique du Nord, qui montraient une hausse du taux de carbone 14 d'environ 7,2 % entre l’an 775 et l’an 785 de notre ère.
