Watching the video can be enough for some students, it's better if we can call students' attention to specific sections of videos while they are watching them. The following tools allow you to add comments and questions to videos that you share with your students. Vibby is a service for breaking YouTube videos into segments and inserting comments into those segments.
What Can Tech Coaches Learn From the Marketing Masters? We are all familiar with the Diffusion of Innovations theory or the Roger’s Adoption Curve, even if we don’t call it by the official name. We all know at least one friend, family member or colleague that always buys the latest device because it’s new and exciting (that person owns a drone or a smart watch right now), and every type of consumer between that friend, colleague or family member who is an “innovator”, all the way through to the “laggard”, who questions every innovation until it’s so widely accepted they can’t avoid it anymore (that person either still complains about, or doesn’t yet own, a smart phone). What’s interesting about this, to me anyway, is that there is a lot of research and experience in the consumer industry, particularly around technology, about how these different segments of the population respond to different marketing strategies. Ultimately, my goal, as a coach, is to improve student learning through the use of innovative teaching and learning strategies.
Why Don't People Use Mind Maps For Taking Action? The was a great survey put out a few months ago on Biggerplate.com. It provides some stepping off points toward meaningful discussion. It’s lets us find new uses for a tool we’re already familiar with, and helps us feel like our contributions matter. I’d like to add a little commentary as to why I think some of the results came out the way they did. I jotted down a few notes when I first read the survey way back in January 2015, but then my planning for the move to Abu Dhabi took over my focus.

Using Google Docs for dynamic Canvas content If you create a document in Google Drive, you can click on File > Publish to the Web > Publish to generate a link or embed code. The embed code can be used anywhere in Canvas where the Rich Content Editor is available to you (switching views to the HTML Editor). Whatever changes you make in your Google Docs will automatically update in your Canvas course(s). I've created a sample Google Doc.

Flipped learning is more than just an efficient way to teach. It is also an opportunity to take students to deeper levels of comprehension and engagement. One of the most important benefits of flipped learning is that it takes the teacher away from the front of the room. No longer is class focused on information dissemination, but instead, time can be spent helping students with difficult concepts and extending the learning to deeper levels. Perhaps the greatest benefit of flipped learning is that it gives teachers more time to interact with students one-to-one and in small groups.
Excellent Tools for Creating Videos Without Installing Software Over the years I've published some lists and reviews of free tools for creating videos online. Quite a few of those tools have been for creating simple videos that are really just automated, audio slideshows. See Animoto for an example of this. There's nothing inherently wrong with having your students use those tools, but at some point you will want to take your video projects to the next level. What is Blended Learning? A quote from the former US Secretary of Education The goal of blended courses is to join the best features of in-class teaching with the best features of online learning to promote active independent learning. Blended courses are courses in which a significant portion of the learning activities have been moved online, and time traditionally spent in the face-to face (FTF) classroom is reduced but not eliminated. Using computer-based technologies, instructors use the blended model to redesign some lecture or lab content into new online learning activities, such as case studies, tutorials, self-testing exercises, simulations, and online collaborations. There is no one model for blended learning.
