How Netflix does A/B Testing – uxdesign.cc – User Experience Design Have you ever wondered why Netflix has such a great streaming experience? Do you want to learn how they completed their homepage plus other UI layout redesigns through A/B testing? If so, then this article is for you! I’ll start with sharing my takeaways from a Designers+Geeks event I attended last week at Yelp. The two great speakers Anna Blaylock and Navin Iyengar, both product designers at Netflix, walked through insights gleaned from their years of A/B testing on tens of millions of Netflix members, and showed some relevant examples from the product to help attendees think about their own designs. Experimentation I really liked this first slide of the presentation and think it’s smart to use an image from the TV show “Breaking Bad” to explain the concept of experimentation! Having recently joined Globoforce, I was tasked with creating an illustrative style that would be used across our white-label platform. Our main aim for our illustrations is to inject some personality into areas on the platform that felt unfinished. Explore, Explore, Explore No one said it was going to be an easy, quick process. Some styles work, some don’t so you’re going to have to be willing to dump the ideas, that may be good, but just don’t work for what you’re trying to achieve for this particular project. (That’s tonight!) Jonathan Luther grew up outside of Buffalo, New York, where eating Red Hots hot dogs was a rite of passage. Stevens has been a designer for twenty years, doing a mix of branding and identity work as well as illustration. “We wanted the logo to have a bit of a diner feel,but not lose that roadside hot dog stand feeling as well.” This logo design captures just the right personality of JJ’s Red Hots, working in tandem with the typography. Stevens’s early iterations of the hot dog mascot had a devilish connotation—even holding a pitchfork. “We weren’t trying to capture something in a time capsule, but wanted it to feel like it had been influenced by all these classic things.”
