Surf Punks The Surf Punks were a pop punk band formed in 1976 by Malibu residents Dennis Dragon (son of the symphony conductor Carmen Dragon, brother of Captain & Tennille's Daryl Dragon and ex-drummer of The Byrds and The Beach Boys in the early seventies), and Drew Steele. Dennis recruited the additional talents of Malibu residents Tony Creed AKA the "Hulk", for lead guitar and blues harp, fellow bodysurfer/frisbeeist John Hunt on the bass, and South Bay resident John Heussenstamm for lead guitar. This was the original core group, produced and engineered by Dennis in his garage studio across the street from Zuma Beach, his favorite body surfing spot. Mark Miller joined them on "Locals Only." Jeff Eyrich - AKA "Ray Ban" - joined the Surf Punks on bass when John Hunt left the group. Scott Goddard (b. 1952–d. 2006) later joined as lead vocalist on a few songs.

Whisky A Go Go: When LA Rock Ruled the Strip Situated on a dusty corner of Sunset Strip, the Whisky a Go Go is a piece of living music history. No other venue on LA’s notorious rock block can lay claim to so many legendary performances. It powered LA’s music scene for over 50 years and introduced an entire generation of music – from The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield to Frank Zappa and the Doors – to the rest of the world. An ornate Parisian-themed discotheque in Hollywood seems like an unlikely place for the golden age of LA rock, but nothing about the Whisky was ordinary.

Debbie Harry Early life[edit] Debbie Harry was born Angela Trimble on July 1, 1945, in Miami, Florida. At the age of three months, she was adopted by Richard Smith and Catherine (née Peters) Harry,[4] gift shop proprietors in Hawthorne, New Jersey, and renamed Deborah Ann Harry.[5] Harry learned of her adoption at four years old and later, in the late 1980s, located her birth mother, a concert pianist,[6] who chose to not establish a relationship with her.[7] Career[edit]

Why L.A. Is More Punk than New York "New York is a parochial town run by publishing media that likes to think it invented everything," said Don Waller, co-founder Back Door Man fanzine. This might explain why, early on, the punkness of L.A. bands like the Seeds and the Doors was ignored by New York, who decided that Lou Reed was "more street" than Jim Morrison, and that any town associated with the Eagles could never possess the grit of the Lower East Side, or the tortured poetry of Patti Smith. But punk, born in the Bowery, would soon evolve into a mutated beast in the gutters of Hollywood, circa 1977, when Darby Crash began a quest to prove that L.A. was just as punk as the U.K., not New York, which was too square, too Ivy league for consideration. This is what LA punk rock was all about When it comes to getting credit for nurturing the rise of punk music, L.A. is typically overshadowed by such cities as New York and London, which are known for giving birth to seminal punk bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols. But two new books by local punk legends are helping to shine a spotlight on the early L.A. punk scene. “Our scene, I would say, was just as great as the London scene and the New York scene,” said Keith Morris, the former Black Flag and Circle Jerks lead singer whose autobiography, “My Damage: The Story of a Punk Rock Survivor,” written with Jim Ruland and published by Da Capo Press, chronicles the ups and downs of his life.

Jon Savage and the lost history of California punk Javier Escovedo is remembering the day snipers turned up at a Zeros gig. "We played Larchmont Hall, this place run by senior citizens," says the frontman of the 70s California punk band. "When the audience started pogoing, the old guys thought it was a fight, like a riot. Punk rock in California Since the late 1970s, California has had a thriving regional punk rock movement. It primarily consists of (but is not limited to) bands from the Los Angeles, Orange County, Ventura County, San Diego, San Fernando Valley, San Francisco, Fresno, Bakersfield, Alameda County, Sacramento, Lake Tahoe, Oakland and Berkeley areas. History[edit] Pre-1976[edit] Los Angeles had a very strong glam rock scene in the early 1970s, mostly centered on the club Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco, run by Rodney Bingenheimer, who later, as a disc jockey for KROQ's Rodney on the ROQ, did much to promote LA punk bands. Many figures from this earlier scene would play notable roles in the later punk scene.
