Derfor kan du på Statsministeriets hjemmeside læse lidt om historien bag nytårstalerne, ligesom du kan høre og se de fleste gamle nytårstaler. I Danmark har der udviklet sig den tradition, at statsministeren i forbindelse med nytåret holder en nytårstale, som bliver transmitteret i radio og tv. Det var statsminister Thorvald Stauning, der holdt den allerførste nytårstale i 1940. Frem til 1959 blev talerne udelukkende transmitteret i radioen. Frem til i dag har statsministeren holdt nytårstaler med undtagelse af årene 1968, 1972, 1975 og 1984.
