How to argue with an Islamist A few days ago I chatted with an Islamist, a young Pakistani man who dreamed of establishing a pan-Islamic caliphate stretching across the Muslim world and based on the ancient laws of Muhammad. This young man voiced ideas that would have shocked me once, but which I have become familiar with over years of online discussions. A mutual friend, however, was appalled and baffled by his theocratic notions so I decided to put together this list of tips for debating with Islamists. These tips should not be used thoughtlessly. I often see Islamists and other political radicals regurgitating simplistic arguments taken from radical blogs without ever bothering to consider them. Here I encourage readers to introspect and question their own prejudices. 50 Incredible, Historical Speeches You Should Watch Online You hope that your professors will be good speakers who can keep your interest for at least the length of a class period, but more often than not, you’ll have a teacher or two each semester who drones on and on and doesn’t make you feel passionate about the subject. The Secret Law of Page Harmony “A method to produce the perfect book.” The perfect book. This is how designer-genius Jan Tschichold described this system. Not the ok book, nor the pretty good book, but the perfect book. This method existed long before the computer, the printing press and even a defined measuring unit. School of Thinking » 2011 » May Dr Hewitt-Gleeson, 31 January, 2011: 30 years ago I had an idea for a network of family thinkers. That idea was to start the CoRT Family Network to train 300,000 ‘teachers of thinking’ around the world.I shared this idea with Edward de Bono who wrote to me saying he thought the idea was “brilliant” and he suggested we call this project the Edward de Bono School of Thinking. The idea was to train families in the CoRT Thinking skills. We kicked it off in New York on 17 November, 1979.This strategy of training families to be ‘teachers of thinking’ became so successful that it has led to the largest metacognition movement in the world for the teaching of thinking skills.

Announcing: Open Foresight & The Future of Facebook Project In a world characterized by increasing complexity and accelerating change, we need tools that help us understand future possibilities in order to make more informed decisions today. The field of Futures Studies, or Strategic Foresight, has already developed many such tools, but they are still not commonly utilized by the general public. So, I’ve partnered up with a colleague, Alvis Brigis, to help elevate the ‘futures thinking’ meme. We’re developing a process called Open Foresight, which aims to serve as an updated model for harvesting collective insight, generating scenarios, and creating strategic roadmaps into the future. By combining available data, opinions from the experts, and the conventional wisdom of the crowds, we’ll be able to analyze a topic from a wide range of perspectives and viewpoints. We’ll then distill that down into a series of animation-rich videos that summarize these insights.

Buying headphones: basics I’ve thought of writing a thread like this for at least a year, but since I’m home with a cold, and nothing better to do, I thought I’d start it out. It’s meant to provide basic pointers for newbies who might be a little overwhelmed, as many of us were when we first found this site. I tried to think of all the threads I’ve seen and what might be helpful in general terms. You can agree with me on things or not, and that’s fine.
