Menstruation: There's nothing dirty about it | SBS Voices Being raised in the Greek Orthodox religion, I was taught that to receive Holy Communion, you had to be ‘clean’. As a young growing girl, this meant I had to be free from sin, free from ‘unclean’ thoughts, showered, dressed formally, have abstained from meat and dairy products, and not be menstruating. So for as long as I can remember, I considered by period dirty. ‘Clean’ and ‘pure’ is a concept common to many religions, not just one that belongs to my Greek Orthodox Church. While it was repeatedly emphasised during the sermon at church and at the church youth group I attended, the more shameful criteria of what being clean – such as virginity, masturbation and menstruation – was usually conveyed to us growing girls by our mothers. Of course, times change and people grow up to form their own ideas, rather than those imposed from above from parents or institutions. For example, myth two as "during their period, women must not kiss icons or other sacred objects".

The crusade for menstrual equity If it bleeds, it leads. That’s one of journalism’s most enduring truisms, an axiom born from the front page that continues to regulate our triage in a world of screens, whether we’re transfixed by the horror of a terrorist bombing or make-believe carnage in Game of Thrones. “There will be blood” is the media’s eternal promise, and taunt, challenging us not to look away. But there has always been one glaring exception, hidden in plain sight: blood’s ultimate taboo. At any given moment, about 800-million people around the world are menstruating, many in secrecy and shame. About half of them had no knowledge of periods before their first cycle and still lack the resources to manage it. Before going any further, a disclaimer seems in order. MORE: The face of women in the age of Donald Trump Though Western secular culture shows more tolerance, the stigma of menstruation still runs deep. MORE: ‘How we treat women’ The issue also intersects with environmental politics.

Indian men are helping destigmatise menstruation with the #PadManChallenge | SBS Voices People throughout India are joining in on a Twitter hashtag trend that is sweeping the nation - the #PadManChallenge. The challenge has picked up speed in the last few days, and encourages people — particularly men — to photograph themselves holding a sanitary pad in order to help destigmatise menstruation, and show that it's not taboo to show or speak openly about period products. The selfie-taker will then post the photo to social media with the hashtag #PadManChallenge, and challenge some of their friends to join in by tagging them. Bollywood stars such as Diana Penty, Aditi Rao Hydari and Vaani Kapoor have also taken part in the challenge in order to raise awareness: Indian actor Rajkummar Rao took the challenge to a whole other level by filming a skit, in which he heads to a chemist to purchase pads: The challenge was boosted by Akshay Kumar, who is the star of upcoming Bollywood film Pad Man, a biopic about Arunachalam Muruganantham.

Pads, tampons may soon be available to all B.C. students without charge VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Students across B.C. may soon not have to pay for feminine hygiene products. Education Minister Rob Fleming says the province is looking into how much such a program would cost. This comes after New Westminster’s school board decided to become the first city in B.C. — and all of Canada — to offer tampons and pads free of charge in bathrooms at all public schools. Since then, several other school districts have said they’re looking into doing the same thing. RELATED: Tampons and pads will soon be free for students in New West public schools “No student should have to miss school because they don’t have access to menstrual products,” said Fleming in a statement. “When I first heard of the New Westminster school district initiative I asked staff to find out more about what they are doing. 4. 5. Period poverty and stigma in Australia is 'a bigger issue than you might think'. Here's why Queensland has become the latest state to make period products available for free in public high schools. While the move has been applauded by campaigners against period poverty and stigma, they say more work needs to be done. "Access to period products should never be a barrier to learning", Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said on Tuesday, announcing that all state high school students will have access to free period products such as tampons and sanitary pads from next year. CEO of girls’ equality charity Plan International Australia, Susanne Legena, welcomed the announcement, telling SBS News while Australia still has “a way to go” in addressing period poverty and stigma “these kinds of decisions will have long-term generational impact". Having access to period products “really does impact whether people go to school, how comfortable they feel when they are at school, and it just removes one of those barriers to people being able to thrive and just be themselves”, she said.

Vancouver professor pushes for free tampon and pad dispensers in schools | Daily Hive Vancouver When Dr. Selina Tribe learned that her daughter’s Vancouver school was not equipped with a coin-free tampon and pad dispensers for female students, she felt something had to be done. “I was taken aback by that and indeed went and talked to the school. And that, in fact, is the policy of the school boards is in general — to not have any of those [machines] installed at all,” Tribe, who is a professor at Douglas College, told Daily Hive in an interview. Tribe took action by having a coin-free dispenser installed at Sir John Franklin Elementary School, where her daughter is a student. She says that the current school board policy requests students to go down to the office if they are in need of a tampon or a pad. “There are so many problems with that,” explains Tribe. New Westminster School Board considering recommendation Tribe felt that the coin-free dispensers should be available at all schools and decided to reach out to various school board trustees in Metro Vancouver. A national issue

Breaking Silence on Menstrual Hygiene | UNICEF Office of Innovation  Below is a sample of questions raised: “They say you should not take bath during first 3 days of periods, is it true?” “I know about menstruation, but what are the ways I can ensure hygiene during periods?” “Is it harmful to use sanitary napkin up to 10 hours?” “What sort of hygiene should be adopted during periods?” “If someone has menstruation, should she go to school or not” “I feel a lot of pain during periods, why is that and what should I do” Pakistan’s growing youth population is increasingly dependent on social media as a viable source of information. NDP Passes Resolution To Make Menstrual Products Free OTTAWA — NDP delegates adopted a resolution at the party's annual convention Saturday to make feminine hygiene products free. The resolution urged the party to immediately recommended the creation of a health subsidy to make menstrual products and contraceptives available to Canadians at no cost. "Tampon and pads should be treated just like toilet paper," said Tiffany Balducci, a party delegate from the Durham Labour Council. "They serve a similar purpose — items that tend to our everyday, normal bodily functions." Fred Chartrand/The Canadian Press Balducci asked the delegates in Ottawa to raise their hands if they brought their own rolls of toilet paper to the convention hall. "I often wonder if men got periods how different this conversation would be," she said, highlighting that it's a feminist, working-class, and poverty issue. Tax break on menstrual products In 2015, the NDP tabled a motion to scrap the tax on menstrual products, calling it "unfair" and "discriminatory."
