Past Meets Present Remember Young Me, Now Me? Photographer Sander Koot has created a similar series, called Back from the Future, where he places old photographs of people next to pictures of their present selves. “In this project, I ask people to find old portraits of themselves, of which they have good memories,” says Koot. “When talking to them about the picture, you see them reliving the happy moment. Only after I know all the details about the past of that picture, (do) we start the shoot." Update: We were able to get in touch with Sander Koot to ask him some questions about this project. Why did you create the series? How did you go about asking these people if you could retake their portraits? When visiting the people for the shoot (at their own homes to make them feel comfortable) I try to hear as much as possible about the selected images. While making the pictures I only try to pay attention to the composition and background, to match the old photo as well as possible. Sander Koot's website

Navy’s Distinctly UFO-Like X-47B War Drone Makes First Flight in Cruise Mode The Navy's ultimate stealth fighter drone has achieved a new milestone — it flew in cruise configuration for the first time, stowing its landing gear for a streamlined flight. The jet-powered, autonomous X-47B is designed for aerodynamic flight — it doesn't even have a tail — partly to improve its stealth capabilities. But until now, its flight tests hadn't retracted the landing gear, making it difficult to test its aerodynamic attributes. Further tests will help engineers prove the aircraft's performance under a wide range of altitude, speed and fuel conditions. Northrop Grumman is developing the X-4B on behalf of the U.S. Navy, which plans to use them on aircraft carriers. It will be the first unmanned aircraft to take off and land on an aircraft carrier deck.
The Wise Guide : Subject to Change Recent hyperspectral imaging of Thomas Jefferson’s rough draft of the Declaration of Independence has clearly confirmed past speculation that Jefferson made an interesting word correction during his writing of the document, according to scientists in the Library of Congress’ Preservation Research and Testing Division (PRTD). Jefferson originally had written the phrase “our fellow-subjects.” But he apparently changed his mind. Over the word “subjects” he inked an alternative, the word “citizens.” The correction seems to illuminate an important moment for Jefferson and for a nation on the eve of breaking from monarchical rule: a moment when he reconsidered his choice of words and articulated the recognition that the people of the fledgling United States of America were no longer subjects of any nation, but citizens of an emerging democracy. Fenella France, a scientist in PRTD, conducted the hyperspectral imaging in the fall of 2009 and discovered a blurred word under “citizens.”
