Voltaire Biographie : Voltaire (1694-1778) est le pseudonyme anagrammatique d'Arouet le Jeune. Issu d'un milieu bourgeois, il est élevé par les Jésuites, faisant ses premières armes dans une société épicurienne et libertine. Ses premiers écrits satiriques sur les amours du Régent le conduisent à la Bastille. On connaît Voltaire pour ses contes mais il a d'abord du succès avec ses tragédies, qui le font recevoir à la Cour après un éloignement forcé en Hollande. Un incident dans la loge de la comédienne Adrienne Lecouvreur le renvoie à la Bastille puis l'exile en Angleterre où il découvre un régime de liberté selon son coeur.

Continuing Shakespeare - Mia Smith I ett tidigare blogginlägg berättade jag om hur jag introducerat Shakespeare till mina elever i år 7 och 8. Arbetet har fortlöpt, och här tänkte jag presentera ytterligare några bitar. Shakespeare your way Den här uppgiften är den, enligt mig och många av mina elever, mest spännande inom det här arbetsområdet. Shakespeares verk har tolkats och omarbetats i otaliga versioner ända sedan de skrevs, och mina elever får nu göra egna tolkningar. Fokusområdet är att anpassa språket efter syfte, mottagare och situation. Eleverna fick inspiration från ett Tedx Talk om att tolka Shakespeare inom hiphip-genren och en låt av Taylor Swift baserad på Romeo and Juliet. Eleverna hittade snabbt olika spår och klurade på olika tekniska lösningar för att se hur man kan gestalta den klassiska berättelsen på olika sätt. Romeo and Juliet: Plot Overview In the streets of Verona another brawl breaks out between the servants of the feuding noble families of Capulet and Montague. Benvolio, a Montague, tries to stop the fighting, but is himself embroiled when the rash Capulet, Tybalt, arrives on the scene. After citizens outraged by the constant violence beat back the warring factions, Prince Escalus, the ruler of Verona, attempts to prevent any further conflicts between the families by decreeing death for any individual who disturbs the peace in the future. Romeo, the son of Montague, runs into his cousin Benvolio, who had earlier seen Romeo moping in a grove of sycamores. Meanwhile, Paris, a kinsman of the Prince, seeks Juliet’s hand in marriage. Romeo and Benvolio, still discussing Rosaline, encounter the Capulet servant bearing the list of invitations. In Capulet’s household, young Juliet talks with her mother, Lady Capulet, and her nurse about the possibility of marrying Paris. The feast begins.

Learning to Teach by Learning Badly: Lessons in Bookbinding A role reversal is among the best means to learn. I am preparing to teach again after a bit of a break. I have made most of my career in the classroom, and I have enjoyed it. I recently was a student for a week. I completed a certificate in bookbinding at the San Francisco Center for the Book, and being not especially good at the craft was instructive. I will be a better teacher for being a bad student. Over the course of 40 hours, equivalent to a standard work week, we made four books: coptic, flat-back case bound, limp-paper bound, and classic rounded back bound. My results will be gifts for family members who will count the sentiment. This entire enterprise was humbling. Some of the other students had read books about making books, and they had made earlier attempts — they brought in examples or showed photographs. All of us agreed that there was no substitute for experience. But the teacher plays a major role. People naturally enjoy making things.
