Flying

Flying
Flying is also fun and challenging. You have to think and act in three dimensions. You have the freedom to move to a lot of new spots on the globe. You learn to examine and appreciate scenery and natural phenomena that you'd never be able or wouldn't bother to see from the ground. Charles Lindbergh put it best: "Science, freedom, beauty, adventure." Sadly Lindbergh was, in addition to being a great aviator, a supporter of the Nazis. Even if the end goal is soaring, you might want to try this some time. Happy to hear of your new interest, Phil. Seattle Space Needle After you finish your instrument rating, you may find your VFR skills have deteriorated because the instrument flying gets you accustomed to being led through the system to the end of the runway.

How I Can Afford My Life Of Constant Travel I’m confused. I’m simply confused as to how it’s possible that I have so far failed to properly explain how I’ve managed to travel/live/work abroad nonstop for 12 years straight (and counting). The questions are still pouring in every single day: How do you do it? And while I thoroughly enjoy communicating with readers (I’m being completely serious and encourage you all to continue sending your emails to me as often as you wish), the fact that these very questions are on the minds of so many of you out there has led me to believe that I need to do a better job at providing the answers. While it’s true that I’ve already written plenty of posts on the matter, clearly all of these posts, even as one collective entity, still fall well short of proving that a life of travel is not some crazy fantasy but a perfectly reasonable and easily attainable lifestyle option instead. So what am I to do? The following is a brief summary of the past 12 years of my life. December 25, 1999: March 2000 April 2003

Tom Philo's Aviation Rules of Thumb Some common rules or other aircraft terms to remember Aircraft Tips, Basic Flight Procedures, and Strategies for Light Aircraft Every field has some "rules of thumb" that are truisms. Aviation is no different. Aborting a takeoff halfway down the runway will allow you to stop on the runway.Always be at least 1000 feet above the terrain (2000 in mountains) to ensure you will miss any unknown or unseen obstructions or an upwind / downwind draft over a hill / mountain. The distance / time to clear an obstacle is reduced by 5% for every 100 lbs below max gross weight. A lot of new efforts are underway in the industry. As a member of AOPA when you renew your membership you get a lot of useful items like this Airspace at a Glance reference card. While at Reno in 2000 I picked up from the FAA a "Guide to Airport Signs and Markings". Current Altitude: 6500, pattern 1500'. 6500-1500/1000*3 = 15 miles out. Each aircraft has their own checklist created by the manufacturer and approved by the FAA. FARs

My boomerang I build close to fifthy boomerangs over more than 20 years, till I got able to carve my first really perfect boomerang. Lots of items return to the thrower when they are tossed in the air. A stone thrown upwards falls back, a frisbee thrown high upwards in the wind, commercial boomerangs that return once in a while by mistake... To me a real boomerang is something you throw like a hatchet. It makes a long and complicated flight that seems to last an eternity. My best criterion to distinguish my favorite kind of boomerang is you have to throw it holding it vertically like a hatchet or nearly. Other kinds of boomerangs exist. Some answers to common questions: One cannot say that you stretch your arm and the boomerang comes back in your open hand. The boomerang displayed above is rather dirty because it endured several days of experiments. You can see on the picture I glued two copper coins inside the wing ends. You need no special skills nor force to launch it. The shape Wing profile

Bioengineered Bacteria Pump Out Fuel for Cars A humble soil bacteria has become a genetically engineered factory capable of making fuel for cars. But the project still has to get out of the lab and scale up to industrial-size production. The MIT project aims to make transportation fuels 10 times more efficiently than existing biofuels derived from living organisms. Researchers swapped out the genes of the R. eutropha bacterium so that it can create isobutanol — an alcohol that can replace or blend with gasoline used by vehicles. "We've shown that, in continuous culture, we can get substantial amounts of isobutanol," said Christopher Brigham, a biologist at MIT. Many similar projects use microbes that make the biofuels within their bodies, so that researchers must kill the microbes to get the fuel out. The natural bacteria usually stores carbon by creating carbon polymers similar to petroleum-based plastics. Additional modifications could allow the bacteria to use carbon from sources such as agricultural field waste or city waste.

Road map Approximately twenty-four hours before landing, the crew will move from the transit habitat into the landing module, bringing some of the supplies from the transit habitat. The landing module will then detach from the transit habitat, which is too large to land on Mars. The transit habitat is discarded and stays in orbit around the sun. The landing technology will be the same as used for previous cargo missions. This will ensure that the human crew lands in a system that has been tested several times already. Upon landing, the crew takes up to forty-eight hours to get used to gravity after spending six to eight months in space. Redundancy is extremely important, because the astronauts can't abandon their mission in case of an emergency. When the hardware for the second crew is incorporated, the crew of four astronauts will have four living units and four life support units, enough to sustain a crew of sixteen astronauts.

25 Beautifully Illustrated Thought-Provoking Questions A question that makes you think is worth asking… At the cusp of a new day, week, month, or year, most of us take a little time to reflect on our lives by looking back over the past and ahead into the future. To convert the reactor heat into electricity, thermoelectric or thermionic devices could be used, but these have low efficiencies and low power to weight ratios. Beginners Guide to Aerodynamics At this Web site you can study aerodynamics at your own pace and to your own level of interest. Some of the topics included are: Newton's basic equations of motion; the motion of a free falling object, that neglects the effects of aerodynamics; the terminal velocity of a falling object subject to both weight and air resistance; the three forces (lift, drag, and weight) that act on a glider; and finally, the four forces that act on a powered airplane. Because aerodynamics involves both the motion of the object and the reaction of the air, there are several pages devoted to basic gas properties and how those properties change through the atmosphere. This site was created at NASA Glenn as part of the Learning Technologies Project (LTP). There is a special section of the Beginner's Guide which deals with compressible, or high speed, aerodynamics. This site has been intentionally organized to mirror the unstructured nature of the world wide web. Activities: Navigation..

Origami 8-pointed Vase Folding Instructions This is a really pretty star-like origami 8-pointed vase. Too bad it's made out of paper or it would make a really nice tealight holder! Made this origami? Origami 8-pointed Vase Step 1: Start by following instructions for the origami frog base from Step 1 to 5. Before we get to the next step, take some time to look at your paper. And even though you started with a square piece of paper with only 2 sides, your paper now has 8 corners and 8 sides! Origami 8-pointed Vase Step 2: Fold the upper layer from the right to left. Mark Twain&s Top 9 Tips for Living a Kick-Ass Life “It’s no wonder that truth is stranger than fiction. Fiction has to make sense.” “Let us live so that when we come to die even the undertaker will be sorry.” “When your friends begin to flatter you on how young you look, it’s a sure sign you’re getting old.” You may know Mark Twain for some of his very popular books like Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Twain is known for his many – and often funny – quotes. 1. “A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.” If you don’t approve of yourself, of your behaviour and actions then you’ll probably walk around most of the day with a sort of uncomfortable feeling. This can, in a related way, be a big obstacle in personal growth. What you may be bumping into there are success barriers. Or if you make some headway in the direction you want to go you may start to sabotage for yourself. So you need give yourself approval and allow yourself to be who you want to be. 2. “Age is an issue of mind over matter. 3. 4.
