I stood facing the students, watching their expressions, which I could see since the lights were sufficiently bright. I could draw on the screen and change directions as questions arose. In fact I will argue that the ‘golden age of college teaching’ if there was one was stimulated by the addition of the roller to the overhead projector. It allowed the combining of student response, just-in-time teaching, constructivist development and several other educational buzz terms in one simple device. Many schools and classrooms all over are investing in these devices and educators want to know how to use them effectively, apps to consider and more. Apps for Professional Development Twitter App (free) Twitter is one of the most active and beneficial social networks on the web. All educators would be wise to join the conversation. If you haven’t used Twitter yet, I would recommend that you read these excellent blog posts: Google Voice (free) Text and call for free! Skype (free) A beautiful app that allows you to make and receive VOIP calls on your iOS device. HeyTell (free) A fun “walkie-talkie” app for quick voice communication. Load Up Your iPad with a Massive Library of Over 38,000 Free eBooks The iPad is a great device to read on, and if your digital library is feeling a little bare then you’ve come to the right place. We’ve found some of the best places to get free ebooks, ready to be downloaded and opened with iBooks on your shiny new iPad (or iPhone, iPod, Kindle, Nook, or Android, for that matter). Project Gutenberg Top 100 – Full of classics, if you’re only going to visit one source for free ebooks, Gutenberg should be it. They have over 38,000 free ebooks available, and their top 100 list is basically a mirror of the Western Canon of literature. Grab titles from the popular lists, and then search category or by your favorite author to load up on a nearly infinite amount of reading. Gutenberg is probably the best source online, but other sites offer free ebooks too: If you download the books onto a Mac or PC, emailing them to an iPad or iPhone is generally the easiest way to transfer them over quickly without syncing. How would I use them to help my students learn better and help me teach better? Speaking of computers, they were supposed to be the transformation of teaching and learning as we know it. Kinesthetic Learners The iPad has a number of unique features that provide for interesting possibilities in teaching and learning. As a completely portable learning tool, the iPad camera allows documentation to be taken to a whole different level. Students can also attach videos, and voice recordings to their field notes. In math class the GPS of the iPad establishes locale in ways that are profound. Connecting Beyond the Classroom Of course, the mobility provided by the iPad's wireless telephone connection capability allows the unprecedented access to the Internet anywhere students are. Projeter l'écran de l'iPad sur le TNI... sans fil, ni Apple TV ! - Un iPad en cours de français... La tablette s'avère être un outil complémentaire du TNI (l'inverse est également vrai si l'on considère mes récents plantages, cf. billets précédents !) et, d'emblée, j'ai cherché le moyen de projeter, sans fil, l'écran d'un iPad sur le TNI. Sans trop débourser d'argent... et ça s'est compliqué ! Au mois de février, lorsque nous avons su que nous serions probablement retenus pour la prochaine période de prêt des iPads, il n'existait pas (à ma connaissance) de solution logicielle permettant de projet l'écran d'un iPad sur un TNI (via un ordinateur, évidemment) sans utiliser le connecteur VGA disponible pour l'iPad2. La seule solution était l'Apple TV. Or, il me fallait trouver une solution pour qu'un élève, de sa place, puisse présenter un travail (manipulation lors d'un exercice, production d'écrit, recherche lexicale ou plus large sur internet...) au reste de la classe, et permettre ainsi une interaction plus importante. Early Childhood Education and the iPad I was fortunate enough last weekend to receive an invitation to the Sydney Catholic Schools Early Years Conference. I was interested because the conference was centred around creating a clear and coherent vision around Early Years pedagogy. I was also intrigued to see how the iPad fitted in with this vision. One of the sessions I attended was Technology in the Early Years - Apps and iPads by Kate Highfield a Lecturer in Early Childhood from Macquarie University Sydney. Kate suggested that we could plot apps on a educational continuum depending on where the different apps contribute to cognitive development. Instructive Apps:The first type of apps that were identified (Instructive) were those apps that were drill and practice.
