Some People by ~MumblingIdiot on deviantART Materials and Learning Environment, montessori toys, educational materials, prepared environment, homeschooling The Montessori learning environment is much different than the traditional model. Instead of information passing from the teacher to the student, the teacher is skilled in putting the child in touch with the environment, and helping him learn to make intelligent choices and to carry out research in a prepared environment. The teacher then protects the student's concentration from interruption. This fosters a love of lifetime learning in the student. Just as anyone can use the word "Montessori" to describe schools and training centers, they can and DO use the name to describe toys and materials that often have nothing to do with Montessori. Timeline For History of Art: List of Dates: Visual Arts Movements, Styles, Schools, Artists: 2,500,000 BCE-Present -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Age of Postmodernist Art -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From roughly this point onwards, Modern Art (c.1860-1970) or 'Modernism' becomes superceded by what art-historians like to call 'Post-Modernism'. In a nutshell, Modernism (ie. the main movements which emerged during the period 1860-mid 1960s) asserted the supremacy of a particular style or interpretation of reality, normally considerably at odds with the prevailing academic tradition. In contrast, contemporary art movements take the view that the 'substance' of Modernism has performed no better, and must be dumped in favour of greater style. Post-modernism thus represents the triumph of style over substance. Post-modernist art typically employs new media and materials, stresses the importance of 'communication' from artist to audience and seeks to renew the big question: 'what is art?'

Brain Pickings | Education 07 APRIL, 2014By: Maria Popova “It’s insulting to imply that only a system of rewards and punishments can keep you a decent human being.” Isaac Asimov was an extraordinary mind and spirit — the author of more than 400 science and science fiction books and a tireless advocate of space exploration, he also took great joy in the humanities (and once annotated Lord Byron’s epic poem “Don Juan”), championed humanism over religion, and celebrated the human spirit itself (he even wrote young Carl Sagan fan mail). Like many of the best science fiction writers, he was as exceptional at predicting the future as he was at illuminating some of the most timeless predicaments of the human condition. The conversation begins with a discussion of Asimov’s passionate belief that when given the right tools, we can accomplish far more than what we can with the typical offerings of formal education: Page from 'Charley Harper: An Illustrated Life' Today, what people call learning is forced on you.

Investment in K-12 education innovation is soaring, but it’s not all rosy When it comes to public education, it looks like private investors and entrepreneurs are ready to rally like it’s 1999. After several years of relative drought, K-12 education, which has long been seen as a tough nut to crack for private business, is starting to draw investment at nearly record levels, outpacing higher education financing for the first time in several years. According to GSV Advisors, a Chicago-based investment firm that specializes in education, in 2011, transactions in K-12 education climbed to $389 million, which is up from a low point of $13 million in 2005 and more than three times the investment in the sector in 2010. “It was the first time in a long time that the K-12 sector had more financing than the higher ed sector,” said Deborah Quazzo, founder and managing partner of GSV Advisors.
