SEO and Journalism Search engine optimization (SEO) makes journalists groan. They bristle at the idea of ‘stuffing keywords’ into their copy while managers who often don’t understand SEO are desperate for the extra traffic good search rankings could bring. But the truth is that there are many parallels between SEO and journalistic writing and that SEO really can be a journalist’s best friend. Rachelle Money explains. I was working in a newsroom in Scotland when a very senior journalist asked me what all this SEO stuff was about? Journalists by their very nature demand information at rapid gun-fire speed. Rachelle Money: “It's about creating keyword rich content,” I said feebly. Senior Hack: “What?” RM: “You know, like when you're writing your top line you make sure all the most important words are in it, well, it's the same kind of thing.” Senior Hack: “Right, so all this crap about writing content for websites, what they really mean is writing stories, which is what I've bee doing my entire career?”

A 5-minute framework for fostering better conversations in comments sections Last week, my news organization announced we were evolving our online commenting practices a bit to improve the quality of discourse on NPR.org. Our comment threads drew some attention recently when a comment thread about the brutal assault on CBS Correspondent Lara Logan in Egypt went awry, prompting the removal of dozens of comments and an editor’s note reiterating the discussion guidelines. Meanwhile in another corner of the Web, a related discussion of sexual harrassment of women in Egypt unfolded with civility, thoughtfulness, and occasionally even erudition (and also – fair warning — some profanity here and there). What gives? Why are these two online conversations so different? I spoke with community managers at both sites — NPR’s Eyder Peralta and MetaFilter’s Jessamyn West — to put together a framework for how to think about online comments. Five key principles of online conversations Don’t blame (or credit) “The Internet.” For better outcomes, use better filters. Be accountable.

Four reasons why an open-source newsroom is harder than it looks: Lessons from Al Jazeera Editor’s Note: Nikki Usher and Seth C. Lewis are academic researchers studying the intersection of journalists and technologists, or “hacks and hackers.” The latest part of their work included Usher’s two-week visit to Doha, Qatar, in June to study how this phenomenon is playing out at Al Jazeera English. DOHA, Qatar — Open-source software might at first seem easy for a news organization to get behind: It’s owned by no one, improved by everyone, and costs nothing to acquire. At Al Jazeera, the network’s top voices have advocated open-source for years. But after visiting the AJE newsroom this summer, it became apparent the much-heralded open-source movement was a lot more complicated, despite Al Jazeera’s advances. 1. As Moeed Ahmad, head of new media for the network, explained to me, open-source is often equated with “hackable” — and not in the good way. Ahmad and others pointed to the fact that Windows has a long history of hacker malfeasance. 2. 3. We did but didn’t find very many. 4.
