PDF Split and Merge Why Preserve Books? The New Physical Archive of the Internet Archive by Brewster Kahle, June 2011 Press on this: NYtimes Books are being thrown away, or sometimes packed away, as digitized versions become more available. This is an important time to plan carefully for there is much at stake. Digital technologies are changing both how library materials are accessed and increasingly how library materials are preserved. After the Internet Archive digitizes a book from a library in order to provide free public access to people world-wide, these books go back on the shelves of the library. Two of the corporations involved in major book scanning have sawed off the bindings of modern books to speed the digitizing process. A reason to preserve the physical book that has been digitized is that it is the authentic and original version that can be used as a reference in the future. As the Internet Archive has digitized collections and placed them on our computer disks, we have found that the digital versions have more and more in common with physical versions.

Foreign Language and ESL Games In fact, even acquiring basic level skills in one or several foreign languages is bound to have a sizable beneficial impact on one’s career and life in general. A great way to begin to learn a foreign language is through online games. Kids and adults alike love learning foreign words and phrases using fun matching games. Long before French scholar Champollion deciphered the three Rosetta Stone languages nearly 100 years ago, the advantages of learning a foreign language were clear. Indeed, foreign language learning statistics show that those who speak more than one language often have greater success in their careers. Foreign language education is therefore an important topic to tackle. Fortunately, foreign language teachers have many foreign language resources at their disposal, including excellent foreign language lesson plans. Other foreign language and ESL games include word matches for various languages, such as French-English translation and German-English translation.

Working at the Apple Store: Tales from the Inside While I think Apple's approach is a little over the top, welcome to working retail and dealing with the public. I may sound a little out of line because I'm an Engineer, but I've worked at many places throughout HS/college and my parents have both worked in retail and never held back telling stories. Anywhere you work where you have to speak to a customer, you're going to be given a set of lines and rules on how you speak to them, because the customer IS going to be a complete idiot while at the same time, thinking you're the idiot, but you can't make THEM feel like an idiot or they'll get mad at you and everything you represent. Your company is going to give you incentives and goals in order to push customers into buying something they don't need. Your company is going to have a way of rating your performance that you cannot control, there will be an impossible goal to reach and it will fluctuate as often as the temperature outside.

Some gestures project a very positive message, while others do nothing but set a negative tone. Most people are totally oblivious to their own body language, so the discipline of controlling these gestures can be quite challenging. Most of them are reflexive in nature, automatically matching up to what our minds are thinking at any given moment. Nevertheless, with the right information and a little practice, we can train ourselves to overcome most of our negative body language habits. iCloud’s real purpose: kill Windows Apple’s announcements yesterday about OS X 10.7 pricing (cheap), upgrading (easy), iOS 5, and iCloud storage, syncing, and media service can all be viewed as increasing ease of use, but from the perspective of Apple CEO Steve Jobs they perform an even more vital function — killing Microsoft. Here is the money line from Jobs yesterday: “We’re going to demote the PC and the Mac to just be a device – just like an iPad, an iPhone or an iPod Touch. We’re going to move the hub of your digital life to the cloud.” Just like they used to say at Sun Microsystems, the network is the computer. Or we could go even further and say our data is the computer. This redefines digital incumbency. machines that nearly all of our data and our ability to use that data have been trapped.
