Meridian Institute - Home Page Physiological Regulation Through Manual Therapy ERIC A. MEIN, MD DOUGLAS G. RICHARDS, PhD DAVID L. McMILLIN, MA JOHN M. McPARTLAND, DO, MS CARL D. From the Meridian Institute Virginia Beach, Virginia (EAM, DGR,DLM,CDN) and Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine East Lansing, Michigan (JMM) Manual therapy can be divided into two distinct conceptual approaches to treatment: specific adjustments for correction of anatomic issues (structure) and adjustments for physiologic regulation (function). Recognition of the structure versus function choices within manual therapy dates to the early days of osteopathy. In our treatment of a spine there are two points which we may take into consideration; two objects which we may have in view. The textbooks of the early 1900s emphasized regulation, 2,5,11,19,23,30a,51,60 yet by 1991, Kuchera and Kuchera state: "The majority of DOs do not use manipulation. Reflexes Coordination Centers

Brain Atlas - Introduction The central nervous system (CNS) consists of the brain and the spinal cord, immersed in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Weighing about 3 pounds (1.4 kilograms), the brain consists of three main structures: the cerebrum, the cerebellum and the brainstem. Cerebrum - divided into two hemispheres (left and right), each consists of four lobes (frontal, parietal, occipital and temporal). The outer layer of the brain is known as the cerebral cortex or the ‘grey matter’. It covers the nuclei deep within the cerebral hemisphere e.g. the basal ganglia; the structure called the thalamus, and the ‘white matter’, which consists mostly of myelinated axons. – closely packed neuron cell bodies form the grey matter of the brain. Cerebellum – responsible for psychomotor function, the cerebellum co-ordinates sensory input from the inner ear and the muscles to provide accurate control of position and movement. A.T. Still University - Museum of Osteopathic Medicine - A.T. Still Papers and American School of Osteopathy Missouri Digital Heritage website is hosting three collections: Dr. Andrew Taylor Still's Papers, the American School of Osteopathy Record Books and the Charles E. Still Collection. Made available through a State of Missouri LSTA grant. Dr. Dr. Dr. Still’s father – a preacher, doctor, and abolitionist – shaped his ideas about religion, medicine, and politics. The Collections: Andrew Taylor Still Papers [1980.423.10] , [2009.10.168A] The Andrew Taylor Still Papers comprise about six linear feet (1864-1937; bulk 1891-1917). The American School of Osteopathy (ASO) comprises about two linear feet (1892-1924; bulk 1894-1900). The Charles E. American School of Osteopathy Board Minutes, [1987.1226.01, pg 2 & 18] Andrew Taylor Still Papers/American School of Osteopathy is a Library Services and Technology Act Digital Imaging Grant funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and coordinated by the Missouri State Library.
