Rules For Writing Blog Articles by Ken Wilson I promised Burcu that I would write something about writing a blog, and try to establish some rules of good blogging. Now I’m worried – ARE there any rules of good blogging? Or is writing about writing a bit like telling jokes about why jokes are funny? Doomed to failure. I’ll try to find some rules and we’ll see what happens. The above sentence gives us our first useful rule. Or even a phrase. You may think that this is a silly rule, but I think it’s important. So, Rule 1 of writing a blog article – Don’t write dense texts. And here are two more: Rule 2 – Personalise. Rule 3 – Don’t be obsessed with yourself. At first sight, rules 2 and 3 seem to be contradictory. A few weeks ago, I wrote a blog about working as a teacher trainer in London in the 1970s. Here are three ways that I could have started the article. I could have started it like this: Back in the 1970s, I was a teacher trainer at International House in London. Here’s the third way. British Council | Homes of the Future Good morning. Today I'll be experiencing a taste of the future. From the latest in home design to incredible gadgets, I’ll be looking at how we could be living in the future. A hot shower is a great start to the day, but this is no ordinary shower. I’m surrounded by some of the most modern houses in the world. Some of these houses can evolve as people’s lives change. Peter White is the Marketing Manager of the Innovation Park, where the houses are built. Amandeep: Peter, are these houses really a glimpse of the future? Peter White: They are. Amandeep: Just how much do they vary from ordinary houses? Peter White: In some ways they’re very similar. You may have seen the next invention in the movies, and it could mean no more lost keys in the future. Now this control panel is the brain of the house. Now, can you guess what this is? I asked some people who are interested in house design what they would like to see in the house of the future. Woman 1: I would love a self-cleaning house.

Why Nat Geo Launched the Open Explorer Project There has never been a better time to be a curious person. Science has pushed our collective understanding further than we thought possible, but even as science races ahead, there's a persistent hindrance to our progress: access. For too many, taking part in the scientific process is seen as a distant and daunting endeavor. Even the term "exploration" can seem dusty, dated, and decidedly inaccessible. If asked to name a contemporary explorer, most people would be stumped. Few are aware that 95 percent of the ocean is unexplored, that thousands of rivers remain unknown to science, and that research is uncovering new species constantly. It doesn't have to be that way. It's time to reclaim the word “exploration” and redefine it to encompass the incredible work of present-day researchers, students, and citizen scientists. There's a hard line around good science—peer reviewed, hypothesis-driven, well-documented. Open Explorer is for the curious, the makers, and the doers.
