Setting out your letter As everyone always says, a letter needs a beginning, middle and end. Much of the time, your letter should start 'Thank you for your letter of 15 April' and certainly not 'I acknowledge receipt of The middle will be your points, answers and questions in a logical order. The end does not normally need to be a summary. Some of the suggestions in this guide may be very obvious to you while others may go against your own style. The date It is now common practice to write the date as 7 July 2002 instead of 7th July 2002. The greeting If you are on first-name terms with the reader, use 'Dear Jane'. Headings These are not usually necessary. Punctuation Don't put commas after: each line of the address;the greeting (Dear Jane); orthe ending line (Yours sincerely). Also, you don't need full stops in initials - Mr P D Smith, the DSS and so on. Endings If you used the name of the person at the start of the letter then end with 'Yours sincerely'. Otherwise end with 'Yours faithfully'.

Introduction Welcome to the plain English report-writing course. All you need is a pen, some paper, a little time and the will to learn. There is no great mystery about writing clear, concise and effective reports. All the examples are genuine. The answers to all the exercises are at the end of the guide. At the end of the course is a list of common bureaucratic words with plain English alternatives. So what's plain English? First let's say what plain English isn't and destroy some of the myths about it. It's not 'cat sat on the mat' or 'Peter and Jane' writing. Sadly, thanks to the bureaucrats of public service industries, local councils, banks, building societies, insurance companies and government departments, we have learned to accept an official style of writing that is inefficient and often unfriendly. But in the last few years, many of these offenders have started to put things right, either rewriting their documents clearly or training their staff in the art of plain English or both.

I love writing… blog posts, stories, poems, and more. As much as I love it though, writing can be a challenge. Often one of the most difficult parts is just getting started. Sometimes we just need a little inspiration, a jump start to get us thinking down a new path. When my daughter was younger we used to do poetry nights where we would use a website (Watch Out for Snakes) that would randomly create titles for us by putting together adjectives and nouns. Just like those random titles inspired me to compose poems, such tools can help our students when they need to write a journal entry, short story, essay, article, poem, or such. Jag har alltså bytt jobb från yrkesprogram till högstadiet. Eftersom jag fick jobbet och sade upp mig så sent som efter skolavslutningen, löpte min uppsägningstid ända in i september, men jag fick en efterträdare redan från skolstarten och kunde därför tillträda redan i slutet av augusti. Tyvärr uppstod ett missförstånd på min nya arbetsplats, vilket fick till följd att min nya tjänst fick lösas med en tillfällig och obehörig vikarie. Jag blev därför tvungen att stanna kvar på Bäckadalsgymnasiet som handledare till min efterträdare samtidigt som jag instruerade och skrev material till min vikarie i Junedalsskolan. Lite stressigt blev det, och den som har följt mig vet att stress tyvärr inte är min bästa gren... För att få det att fungera, bestämde jag mig för ett ganska tydligt upplägg, som inte skulle kräva alltför mycket instruktion eller svenskämneskunskaper. Eleverna fick ett rejält frågebatteri för förståelse, källkritik och argumentationsanalys.

Upplägget i sig är inte revolutionerande men för just denna elev var det det. I /…/ skriftliga framställningar i olika genrer kan eleven formlera sig enkelt, begripligt och relativt sammanhängande. Hur konkretiserar man aspekterna? Jag valde att lägga upp det på ett lite bakvänt sätt för mig då jag brukar börja med att visa på exempeltexter. Gå igenom instruktionen Till att börja med visade jag instruktionen för uppsatsdelen. Eget skrivande Eleverna fick sedan skriva brevet under resten av lektionen och fortsätta under nästa lektion för att hamna på den tid som eleverna får på själva skrivdagen på de nationella proven. Genomgång av bedömningsaspekterna Nästa lektion började vi med att titta på bedömningsaspekterna för skriva. Kamratbedömning på andras texter Fördelen med att läsa så många olika elevexempel på en gång var att de kunde se gradskillnaderna tydligt.
