Using Blooms Taxonomy in education is a highly effective way to scaffold learning for the students. With the recent popularity and pervasive nature of iOS devices in school districts it is essential for educators to understand how to implement Blooms in the classroom using the apps that are available. While this list is by no means fully comprehensive, it will assist educators in getting started when implementing iOS devices in the classroom. This site will change almost daily as it will be updated with new and exciting apps! If you find any that you have worked with in your classroom please email dmileham@e1b.org or tweet @bloomsapps or @dmileham75 with your suggestions. Bloom's taxonomy and English language learners Thinking Skills and English language learners English language learners should be asked critical thinking questions from all levels of Bloom's Taxonomy. Some of the tasks on the taxonomy are difficult for ELLs because they lack the language and vocabulary to work in English. However, teachers need to ask questions from all levels of the taxonomy that are age appropriate and at the English language level of the English language learners. Even very young children can work at the Synthesis and Evaluation levels. Examples at each level below come from Pa Lia's First Day by Michelle Edwards. Level 1: Knowledge. What did Pa Lia's brother do on the way to school? Level II: Comprehension. Why did Pa Lia dawdle on the way to school? Level III: Application. Why did Pa Lia send a note? Level 4: Analysis. How do we know Pa La felt nervous? Level 5: Synthesis. Pa Lia is a new student at school and she has no friends. Level VI: Evaluation. Resource Picks

Bloom's Taxonomy and a Pen As our school division works on AISI project on Critical Thinking (Alberta Initiative for School Improvement), we are focusing on higher level thinking strategies within our classroom. From the time I started university, we have talked about Bloom’s taxonomy and known the importance of higher level questions. Yesterday though, my colleague and friend, Scott Johnston, did a wonderful presentation on assessment. Knowledge – This would be something simple as “What is a pen? Comprehension – Although a step up from the knowledge level, a question for this could be, “What are some uses for a pen? Application – Now that you know what a pen is used for, how do you use it? Analysis – A pen is more than just one part. Synthesis -This is where you take other knowledge and apply it to the knowledge that you have of the pen. Evaluation – Now looking at the pen and building upon all of the knowledge you have, is the pen the best way to be doing the things that it is currently used for?

My Best of series You can find all of my “Best” lists in broad categories here. The link to that page can also be found at the top right of my blog: My Best Of Series I also have them all on another page where they are listed in the chronological order in which I originally posted them. Two thousand “Best” lists are a lot of best lists! In an effort to make them both further accessible and to update many of them, I began posting “Best Lists Of The Week.” I’ve created about sixty-five of them so far and they encompass a few hundred “Best” lists. You will find these newly categorized lists on a page titled My Best Of The Week, and they’ll be shown as “buttons” (you can see what they look like at the top of this blog post) listed alphabetically (more-or-less). I hope you find the lists, and the way they’re organized, helpful! Please note that I continually update and revise all of the lists. The Best Tools To Make Online Flashcards There are an incredible number of free sites where you can create and study flashcards online. In reviewing many of them, I looked at this criteria: * Is it available free-of-charge? * Is it easy to use? * Does it provide some “value added benefit” (besides just sticking a word on one side and a definition on the other of a virtual card) that would make it particularly accessble and engaging to English Language Learners and others? I was only able to find three sites that met this criteria, and they’re the ones that made this “The Best…” list. Here are my picks for The Best Tools TO Make Online Flashcards: Study Stack: The online flashcards are indeed very basic (and very easy for both students and teachers to create). Quizlet is another addition to this list. Memorize.com is not fancy at all, and it’s more complicated than most other online flashcard sites to create anything more than a rudimentary mini-flashcard system. Easy Notecards is a new online flashcard-making site. Related
