Rock Stars and Their Parents - Photo Gallery They had fame, reams of money and fans willing to do wild, unmentionable things just to breathe the same air — but in its September 24, 1971 issue, LIFE magazine illustrated a different side of the lives of rock stars. Like other mere mortals, they often came from humble backgrounds, with moms and dads who bragged about them, fussed over them, called them on their nonsense and worried about them every single day. Assigned to take portraits of the artists at home with their sweetly square folks, photographer John Olson traveled from the suburbs of London to Brooklyn to the Bay Area, capturing in his work the love that bridged any cultural and generational divides that existed between his subjects. Here, LIFE.com brings back Olson’s nostalgia-sparking photos — Marvel at the decor! Gaze in wonder at the shag carpets and bell-bottoms! Zappa on His Parents: “My father has ambitions to be an actor,” Frank told LIFE.

33 Movies To Watch When You're Sad, Glum Or Bummed Out We all have days that don’t feel quite right. Maybe you’re bored, sick or lethargic. Perhaps you just got some bad news that has left you feeling slack-jawed & useless. Maybe you’re worried about your sister, or fighting with your husband. Perhaps it’s just raining outside, like it is here today! Whatever the case, sometimes you just want to indulge in a little escapism. (Oh, I should warn you… I have dreadful taste in movies!) Enjoy! 10 Things I Hate About You This was my favourite movie when I was an angsty teenager! “Iwis it is not halfway to her heart. here. (500) Days Of Summer Okay, this one stars Joseph Gordon Levitt too! I fell in love with (500) Days Of Summer immediately. It’s a total indie rock love story. It is so wonderful. The Addams Family Firstly, I think this movie is responsible for many, many aspects of my adolescence. If you’re not familiar, The Addams Family started as a cartoon in The New Yorker in the 1930s, & became a television show in the 1960s. P.S. Amélie Burlesque

When Anime Fansubs Went WRONG It'll be too selfish of me not to share it to everyone for a great laugh ;-) This is just SO DAMN WRONG!!! Ah my brain!!! I can't get that image out of my head!!! Ok, Cherry Blossom, we get the meaning even without any translation.................... Visiting 10 of the Most Interesting Abandoned Places on Earth Travelers looking for a getaway from the normal getaway should skip the sandy beaches to walk amid silent relics in Namibia, Chernobyl or an abandoned California gold mining town. These empty places may look like Scooby Doo set pieces, but they hold important clues to bigger mysteries about both the past and the future; the creep of urban decay and the necessity of memorializing tragedy. Sometimes history lives alone. We bring you 10 modern ghost cities where you can choose your own adventure, exploring what once was and what could have been. Hashima Island, Japan After spending a little less than a century as a bustling coal mining facility, Hashima Island became known as "Ghost Island" when demand for petroleum outstripped demand for coal in the 1960's and the 5,000 Mitsubishi-employed islanders began a mass exodus. Hashima Island was officially re-opened for tourists in April 2009. 1 of 10 Photos

Imagine Pot Was Legal. How Would You Brand It? Woeful state budgets have relit the long-burning debate about pot legalization---couldn't California rescue itself by making weed legal, then taxing it? Meanwhile, more than 40% of Americans now favor legalization--which is the highest portion since the 1980s; Nate Silver, at FiveThirtyEight, has watched the trends and estimates that popular support will become overwhelming in 15 years time. So Print, the hoary graphic-design magazine, posed a challenge to four top designers: How should the package of legal weed actually look? Lust, a graphic design practice in Amsterdam, tackled the controversy of the product head-on---albeit in a very dry, very arch manner. The New York office of Base worked with its branches in Europe, to create a goofy nod towards weed's illegal past, with containers made from repurposed packaging from other brands--in other words, a reference to the stash boxes ubitquitous in dorm rooms all over the country:

Two Suns? Twin Stars Could Be Visible From Earth By 2012 By Dean Praetorius | HuffingtonPost.com Earth could be getting a second sun, at least temporarily. Dr. Brad Carter, Senior Lecturer of Physics at the University of Southern Queensland, outlined the scenario to news.com.au. Betelgeuse, one of the night sky’s brightest stars, is losing mass, indicating it is collapsing. When that happens, for at least a few weeks, we’d see a second sun, Carter says. The Star Wars-esque scenario could happen by 2012, Carter says... or it could take longer. But doomsday sayers should be careful about speculation on this one. In fact, a neutrino shower could be beneficial to Earth. UPDATE: To clarify, the news.com.au article does not say a neutrino shower could be beneficial to Earth, but implies a supernova could be beneficial, stating, "Far from being a sign of the apocalypse, according to Dr Carter the supernova will provide Earth with elements necessary for survival and continuity." UPDATE II: In a follow-up piece on news.com.au, Dr. Top Image: Source

3 Office Fixes That Will Increase Employee Productivity If you're looking for an excuse for poor productivity, tell your boss it's the office's fault. A new study from the National Bureau of Economic Research claims that air pollution has a big effect on farm worker productivity. Most of us don't work on farms, but environmental factors are having an impact on your productivity anyway--and we're not just talking about the distracting, noisy people in the next row of cubicles. Ventilation It's not your imagination: Stale air really does make it hard to work. Temperature Researchers have shown (PDF) that worker productivity changes based on the temperature. Light In one RPI study, workers in windowed offices were shown to spend 15% more time staying on task than colleagues in windowless offices. These studies may be interesting, but how do they play out in the real world? Yes, you should be jealous of the NASA geeks.

The Giza Geomatrix - GizaMap.com Earth Protection Report The official announcement made by NASA speaks of a suprising low solar cycle beginning at the end of cycle 24 and throught cycle 25. This means cold-cold-cold weather is ahead. It may not be such as the mini ice-age, but we may very well see . Are the ancients who speak about the sun (Ra) telling us “IT” will leave us for a short time? Reports are now coming to us saying that the period known as the 2012-2013 years on our planet just might become a very cold place to live and even up to 100 years. If anyone has followed the latest crop circle information discovered recently in Italy they will understand this article message written by me above explained in part below by the following: A new ASCII code was drawn in crops at Poirino, Italy on June 20, 2011, And seems to identify the crop artist as "Ea" or "EnKi", known as a tall, blond, extra-terrestrial god in ancient Sumeria. What does this have to do with Global Warming? {*style:<i> {*style:<i> </i>*} {*style:<b> </b>*} n k i
