Oopperan Ariadna Mater (2006) klarinettiosuus alkoikin hiljalleen saada yhä solistisempia piirteitä. Varsinaisen klarinettikonserton sävellystyön Saariaho aloitti syksyllä 2009. Ensimmäistä oopperaansa Kaukainen rakkaus varten materiaalia etsiessään Kaija Saariaho tutustui Pariisin Keskiaikaisessa museossa kuvakudossarjaan Neito ja yksisarvinen. Sarja kuvaa symbolein ihmisen viiden tunnetun aistin lisäksi myös kuuluisaa kuudetta aistia. ”Tämän kuudennen kuvakudoksen nimeä ja sisältöä on tulkittu ja tutkittu paljon. Having raised an initial $6.2m via a Kickstarter campaign last year, music for the new format is now available to buy via www.ponomusic.force.com with the cost of an album ranging from $17.99 up to $27.49.
