Sample Items and Performance Tasks Smarter Balanced sample items illustrate the rigor and complexity of the English language arts/literacy and mathematics items and performance tasks students will encounter on the Consortium’s next-generation assessments. The sample items and performance tasks are intended to help teachers, administrators, and policymakers implementing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and preparing for next-generation assessments. They provide an early look into the depth of understanding of the CCSS that will be measured by the Smarter Balanced assessment system. While the items and tasks are not intended to be used as sample tests, educators can use them to begin planning the shifts in instruction that will be required to help students meet the demands of the new assessments. The sample items and tasks can be viewed by grade band (grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school) or content focus. In the coming months, additional items and performance tasks will be made available. Common Core & Ohio Revised Standards Templates The Allen County ESC has devised templates for educators to use to map out the English Language Arts and Mathematics Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Science and Social Studies Ohio revised Learning Standards. These templates list all of the strands, standard/content statements, topics, themes, domains, and clusters based on the 2010 CCSS and Ohio Learning Standards. Teachers have found these templates to be useful for creating pacing guides and/or curriculum maps. Maps are formatted in Excel to make it easy to manipulate columns. Model Curricula These mathematics Model Curricula were written by Ohio educators to support the implementation of Ohio's New Learning Standards for mathematics. In October 2013, Career Connections strategies were added to the Instructional Strategies in the model curricula.

The University of Arizona - Institute for Mathematics & Education The Common Core State Standards in mathematics were built on progressions: narrative documents describing the progression of a topic across a number of grade levels, informed both by research on children's cognitive development and by the logical structure of mathematics. These documents were spliced together and then sliced into grade level standards. From that point on the work focused on refining and revising the grade level standards. The early drafts of the progressions documents no longer correspond to the current state of the standards. It is important to produce up-to-date versions of the progressions documents. This project is organizing the writing of final versions of the progressions documents for the K–12 Common Core State Standards.

Several of the key Standards writers were asked, in their own words, to talk about how the Standards were developedand the goals they set for all students. These videos were developed to help diverse groups – educators, policymakers, parents – better understand the breadth and depth of the Standards and how they will improve teaching, make classrooms better, create shared expectations, and cultivate lifelong learning for all students.
