La Silla La Silla, in the southern part of the Atacama desert, 600 km north of Santiago de Chile and at an altitude of 2400 metres is the home of ESO's original observing site. Here ESO operates two major telescopes: the 3.6m telescope, and the New Technology Telescope (NTT). They are equipped with state of the art instruments either built completely by ESO or by external consortia, with substantial contribution by ESO. La Silla Observatory is hosting regularly Visitor Instruments that are attached to a telescope, for the duration of a run of observation and then is removed from the telescope. La Silla also hosts national telescopes, such as the 2.2-m Max-Planck telescope, 1.2-m Swiss Telescope and the 1.5-m Danish Telescope.

MINEFE - Directions et services - Le Conseil national de la comp Israeli Astronaut Ilan Ramon Tribute Israel's first astronaut, Col. Ilan Ramon, blasted off into space on his historic flight on Space Shuttle Columbia on January 16, 2003. The shuttle flight was the culmination of years of planning and effort. Ramon, the son of a Holocaust survivor, was well aware of the symbolic nature of his flight for Israel and the Jewish people worldwide. The world now mourns this Israeli hero, who lit up the skies with his bravery, smile and love of Israel and the Jewish people. Alan D. Vice President, Electronic Publishing The Jerusalem Post

European Homepage In April of this year, the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope will be celebrating 24 years of observing. To celebrate this milestone, the observatory is releasing a brand new image of part of NGC 2174, otherwise known as the Monkey Head nebula. This new Hubblecast episode showcases this beautiful image, which views a colourful region filled with young stars embedded within bright wisps of cosmic gas and dust. Welcome to the Hubblecast! The Hubblecasts are offered for download in several formats: standard (.mov, .mpeg, .mp4, .m4v), HD (High Definition) and Full HD. High-Definition is rapidly evolving into one of the leading video formats in the broadcasting market. Hubblecast HD and Full HD videos can be watched on TV by the use of digital media receivers such as Apple TV. Radiation and Long-Term Space Flight Team OverviewExploration-class missions will expose astronauts to greater levels and more varied types of radiation. Radiation exposure can lead to many health problems, including acute effects such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue, skin injury and changes to white blood cell counts and the immune system. Longer-term radiation effects include damage to the eyes, gastrointestinal system, lungs and central nervous system. Exposure also increases cancer risk. On missions beyond Earth's orbit, radiation exposure from dangerous bursts of solar radiation, called solar particle events, could impair an astronaut's performance and result in mission failure. Additional Team projects focus on dosimetry systems to monitor radiation, provide advance warning of risk during extravehicular activities and provide real-time dose rates inside a spacecraft.
