MaxBlogPress Ninja Affiliate :: WordPress Affiliate Link Tracking Plugin Applying App Design Concepts to Website Design Should we let app design guide us more in website design? In this article we'll explore how app design concepts can help rethink the planning and design of websites for a better user experience. If you ever look up best practices, design techniques, or trends in application design, you’ll notice something significant: there seems to be a much greater focus on what is most important, that being the user experience, usability, and functionality. We see this stressed every now and then for that in web design too, but how often is it done? Web design should not only be about making things look good, but also about good user experiences and a website’s goals. A Very Well Planned Out Layout If we’re talking about mobile apps or tablet apps, layout is extensively planned out ahead of time — usually to make efficient use of space. The same principle should apply to the Web right? I’m not against pattern libraries. Interactivity & User-Centric Design What makes an app, an app? Mobile First Conclusion
Ideas for Startups October 2005 (This essay is derived from a talk at the 2005 Startup School.) How do you get good ideas for startups? I'd like to reply with another question: why do people think it's hard to come up with ideas for startups? That might seem a stupid thing to ask. Well, maybe not. I think this is often the case. I also have a theory about why people think this. If coming up with an idea for a startup equals coming up with a million dollar idea, then of course it's going to seem hard. Actually, startup ideas are not million dollar ideas, and here's an experiment you can try to prove it: just try to sell one. Questions The fact is, most startups end up nothing like the initial idea. The initial idea is just a starting point-- not a blueprint, but a question. There's a real difference, because an assertion provokes objections in a way a question doesn't. A question doesn't seem so challenging. Treating a startup idea as a question changes what you're looking for. Upwind Doodling Problems Wealth

The Button Color A/B Test: Red Beats Green Button color is one of the longest standing debates in the world of conversion and optimization. Everyone seems to have their favorite color. At different times in the last two years, I’ve heard green, pink, red, orange, and even light blue as THE ONE COLOR that works best. Obviously, this can’t be the case. Fortunately, button color is extremely easy to test. Back in the day, we ran a button color test on the home page of Performable's website , and the results surprised us. The colors we chose to test were green and red. You can see the two pages we tested below: Each of the colors we chose -- green and red -- have interesting connotations. Green Green connotes ideas like “natural” and “environment,” and given its wide use in traffic lights, suggests the idea of “Go” or forward movement. Red The color red, on the other hand, is often thought to communicate excitement, passion, blood, and warning. Hypothesis So, which color would convert more people to click? Button Test Results
