Breaking down Mary Meeker’s Latest: Trends in China & the Global Internet Mary Meeker of the prominent VC Firm Kleiner Perkins Caulfied Byers released her annual Internet Trends slide deck at the D11 Conference on May 29th. Meeker’s report highlighted a number of compelling trends, including the astounding growth of Android and iOS mobile market share (now a combined 88% globally from 5% in 2005), mobile traffic growth (now 15% of global internet use with a year-on-year growth rate of 50%) and the potential for “wearable tech” given that smartphone users reach for their phone 150x a day on average. Meeker’s presentation, which was produced with the help of Chinese-born KPCB senior associate Liang Wu, also had a lot to say about China—including an entire section titled “Lots to Learn from China”. KPCB has a diverse list of investments in China, including JD.com (360 Buy), a B2C direct seller with Amazon-like logistics ambitions that’s struggling with profitability in China’s hyper competitive e-commerce sector. On to Meeker’s points: 6) Facebook vs.
A global look at Mary Meeker's Internet Trends report | Global by DesignGlobal by Design Mary Meeker, a Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers partner, recently provided another healthy dose of data and trends, along with a number of predictions. But the media largely overlooked the web and software globalization implications of many of these slides. So allow me to chime in on the slides that jumped out at me. Let’s begin with this slide: So the “Made in USA” websites are leading the world in overall visitors. But what doesn’t get noted is that the top-7 websites average 91 languages. That’s right, 91 languages — an average skewed heavily by Wikipedia. Here are my language counts: These “Made in the USA” websites have been “Localized for the world.” Next slide: Americans aren’t global leaders in “sharing” — though we’ve been unintentionally sharing quite a lot of our data with the NSA (a rant for a future day). Now, I’m not sure how different cultures define sharing, which has to be a major caveat to this slide. This slide is pretty easy to grasp. See below for the answer:
Internet’s Annual Report Card Shows China’s Rise The latest version of venture capitalist Mary Meeker’s Internet Trends report arrived this morning, and some of the most interesting of her 117 slides are about the scale and growth of Internet use and businesses in China. Both Meeker’s full slide presentation , and a video of her talk at the D11 conference are available online. Here are a few interesting points about the Internet and China from her slides: More people in China now access the Web using their phone (75 percent) than with a desktop PC (71 percent). One consequence of rapid rise in Internet use for business and pleasure in China can be seen in Meeker’s slide below (it’s number six in her presentation), which rounds up the world’s ten largest Internet properties. Those companies made the top ten due to the vast size of China’s population, not by being global players.
