Do i need to say more?

Welcome to Digital Storyteller Boxee The future of television and the media triathlon Mark Cuban doesn’t understand television. He holds a belief, common to connoisseurs the world over, that quality trumps everything else. The current object of his faith in Qualität Über Alles is HDTV. HDTV is the Internet video killer. “HDTV is the Internet video killer.” As January 1, 2000 approaches, and the MP3 whirlpool continues to swirl, one simple fact has made me feel as if I’m stuck at the starting line of the entire download controversy: The sound quality of MP3 has yet to improve above that of the average radio broadcast. MP3s won’t catch on, because they are lower quality than CDs. Meanwhile, back in the real world of the recording business, the news isn’t so rosy… Cuban doesn’t understand that television has been cut in half. But Cuban goes further. This is the season of the HDTV gotcha. Media is a triathlon event. When it comes to media quality, people don’t optimize, they satisfice. YouTube is the HDTV killer.

Tips for Teachers Here are some suggestions for making the best use of multimedia resources in teaching. CD-ROMs vs. Web activities. Keep in mind that students can revisit a Web activity you showed (or mentioned) in class, 24 hours a day. While textbook publishers often provide instructors with animations on CD-ROMs and videodiscs, most students can only view these during lecture. Web activities offer the continuity in and out of class time that these resources lack. Use the Flash plug-in. Preparing for class. Post an outline or list of links on the Web. Zoom in on Flash activities. Enlarge the text. Pausing animations.

Finding Good Online Video: StumbleVideo StumbleUpon, makers of the popular toolbar for using collaborative serendipity to find web sites, is applying its model to online video. We think “stumbling” actually works better for video, where it is hard to find new and interesting stuff. We actually surf for video — happy to find random, unexpected, entertaining clips — whereas on the web we are more directed. After seeing users migrate to an option that allowed them to stumble specifically for videos, StumbleUpon created a video-specific tool, launched late Wednesday night. The result: an in-browser television of sorts, which you can sort by category, and which learns from your ratings if you register. StumbleUpon proper claims 1.6 million members, 600,000 of them active per month. StumbleVideo currently does not feature any advertising, which is StumbleUpon’s business model. StumbleUpon is the first company to be featured in what we hope to be a regular feature on web video curators.

Users want video downloads on the TV Users want more control over the content they watch on their television sets according to an Accenture report released this morning. Over 10,000 Internet users were surveyed in China, South Korea, Italy, Canada, United Kingdom, Taiwan, Germany, United States and Japan—with 1,609 being from the United States—to get a feeling for what consumers want in their future "digital homes. The results found that nearly half (47 percent) of those surveyed in the US want to be able to download movies, TV shows, and other video content to their television sets, with even more of those surveyed globally (54 percent) wishing for such technology. Having become accustomed to sites like YouTube, Google Video, and other Internet video services, consumers have expressed a strong desire to have a similar viewing experience on their TVs. Before such technology begins to invade our living rooms en masse, however, tech companies and service providers need to overcome some challenges.

Blog Archive » Comparing The Flickrs of Video I’ve been tracking a number of sites that offer flickr-like services for video. I’ve taken a look at as many of these services that I could find. The most well known is YouTube, which we profiled in August and which recently raised venture money from Sequoia. But there are at least eight others worth looking at as well. In addition to YouTube, these are CastPost, ClipShack, DailyMotion, Grouper, OurMedia, Revver, Vimeo and vSocial. Instead of writing individual profiles on each of these, I’ve created a quick chart that give a basic overview of the features. Here’s the chart. Most of these companies convert video to Flash. One service that has a unique feature is Revver. A couple of additional notes. UPDATE: I’ve updated the chart above with more information.
