Research Beyond Google: 119 Authoritative, Invisible, and Comprehensive Resources Got a research paper or thesis to write for school or an online class? Want to research using the Internet? Good luck. There’s a lot of junk out there — outdated pages, broken links, and inaccurate information. Using Google or Wikipedia may lead you to some results, but you can’t always be sure of accuracy. Publications : VIRGINIA OPOSSUM: OUR ONLY NATIVE MARSUPIAL (AT PRINTER) : ANR-1414 The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) is the only marsupial native to the United States. The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana), also known as possum, is an animal that can be both a benefit and a nuisance to landowners. Known widely for playing dead when frightened, the opossum is a creature with a unique place among Alabama’s wildlife. As other animals are vanishing from forests in the United States, opossums appear to be flourishing due to their remarkable ability to adapt. Characteristics The Virginia opossum is a medium-sized mammal, weighing 4 to 13 pounds at adulthood.

NASCAR Sponsors RaceStat In a recent survey of NASCAR fans across the country by Performance Research (a Newport R.I. based sports research firm) race fans were asked to identify which, from a list of hypothetical sponsors, were completely inappropriate as a sponsor of a Winston Cup car. Ranking dead last, below the sins of "Condoms", "Penthouse Magazine", "Absolut Vodka", and "Mitsubishi televisions" was "Politicians" with as much as 83% ranking them as completely inappropriate NASCAR sponsors. Not to say that NASCAR fans are not supportive of their sponsors. To the contrary, according to Jed Pearsall, President of Performance Research, "NASCAR fans provide one of the highest levels of brand loyalty and sponsorship support of any one of the hundred or so sports and special events we've tested". In this study, where over 1,000 nationwide, random NASCAR fans were interviewed, over one-half (57%) indicated that they had a higher trust in products offered by NASCAR sponsors.

Ancient origins of modern opossum revealed A University of Florida researcher has co-authored a study tracing the evolution of the modern opossum back to the extinction of the dinosaurs and finding evidence to support North America as the center of origin for all living marsupials. The study, to be published in PLoS One on Dec. 16, shows that peradectids, a family of marsupials known from fossils mostly found in North America and Eurasia, are a sister group of all living opossums. The findings are based in part on high-resolution CT scans of a 55-million-year-old skull found in freshwater limestone from the Bighorn Basin of Wyoming.

Ronfeldt In aerodynamically intense stock-car races like the Daytona 500, the drivers form into multi-car draft lines to gain extra speed. A driver who does not enter a draft line (slipstream) will lose. Once in a line, a driver must attract a drafting partner in order to break out and try to get further ahead. Thus the effort to win leads to ever-shifting patterns of cooperation and competition among rivals. This provides a curious laboratory for several social science theories: (1) complexity theory, since the racers self-organize into structures that oscillate between order and chaos; (2) social network analysis, since draft lines are line networks whose organization depends on a driver's social capital as well as his human capital; and (3) game theory, since racers face a "prisoner's dilemma" in seeking drafting partners who will not defect and leave them stranded. This has two marvelous effects for Daytona-type racing.

Information Resources on the North American Opossum (Didelphis virginiana) Introduction In recent years there has been a renewed interest in the use of marsupials as unique models for biomedical research (Tyndale-Biscoe and Janssens 1988; Saunders and Hinds 1997). Of these the North American opossum (Didelphis virginiana) has received more scientific scrutiny than any other marsupial to date.

Surprise! Drag Racing is One of the Top 3 Sports in the U.S It's been discussed over and over as to who is the bigger, badder, best sport around. Obviously more people watch football whether its the NFL (who's #1 overall) or college football. Nascar has a claim as #2 overall although some of the stick and ball folks don't agree. Baseball is the national past-time. Opossum Their unspecialized biology, flexible diet and reproductive strategy make them successful colonizers and survivors in diverse locations and conditions.[citation needed] Characteristics[edit] Study shows NASCAR fans' digital migration A year ago, NASCAR saw TV viewership among 18- to 34-year-olds decrease dramatically, and a new study by marketing and communications firm Taylor offers at least one reason why. Young NASCAR fans are much more likely to follow races online, on their phones, on the radio or even by attending than fans over the age of 55, according to the study. They’re also a major reason that more than half of all fans now get NASCAR-related information from social media, with Facebook being the destination of choice, and 31 percent of fans say they regularly follow races live on mobile devices, up from 6 percent in 2010.

Natural History Collections: American Marsupials The American marsupials are now assigned to two families, the Didelphidae (the opossums), Order Didelphimorphia, which occur in both North and South America, and the Caenolestidae (the shrew opossums), Order Paucituberculata, found only in South America. We have some specimens of the family Didelphidae. American marsupials continue to thrive in competition with placental mammals and exploit a wide range of diets, being fruit-eating, carnivorous, insectivorous, ant-eating, or grazing animals, and habitats, e.g. being arboreal, terrestrial or burrowing, The Monito del Monte which lives in Chile was once thought to be related to American marsupials but is now considered to be the only livingmember of the otherwise extinct Order Microbiotheria. The 75 species in this family range from the very small fat-tailed opossum, only 100 grams in weight, to the larger Common Opossum, weighing 12 kg.
