Twitter Use 2012 Twitter use Some 15% of online adults use Twitter as of February 2012, and 8% do so on a typical day. Although overall Twitter usage has nearly doubled since the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project first asked a stand-alone Twitter question in November 2010, the 15% of online adults who use Twitter as of early 2012 is similar to the 13% of such adults who did so in May 2011. At the same time, the proportion of online adults who use Twitter on a typical day has doubled since May 2011 and has quadrupled since late 2010—at that point just 2% of online adults used Twitter on a typical day. The rise of smartphones might account for some of the uptick in usage because smartphone users are particularly likely to be using Twitter. Several demographic groups stand out as having high rates of Twitter usage relative to their peers:

Twitter at five: five ways it changed the world Inviting co-workers”. That was all the first tweet said. It is incredibly innocuous and no one could envisage the trail it would blaze across the world as Twitter was taken up in the hands of presidents and global celebrities, revolutionaries and the journalists who have told their stories. Twitter, like just a few other key internet services such as Google, YouTube and Facebook to name three, has had a massive impact on our world and changed it fundamentally in the ways we interact with it and learn about it. Infographic of the Day: Twitter Tracks the Entire Country's Mood Every tweet, no matter how trivial, reveals the writer's mood, through word choice--It can be as obvious as "happy" or as subtle as "diamond." Now imagine if you could take that knowledge, scale it up to the entire Twitter-verse, and use it to gauge the entire country's mood? That's exactly what Alan Mislove, a computer scientist, at Northeastern University, did, using 300 million tweets in real time. Check it out in action, over time--you can actually see moods rising at the end of the work day, and that same pattern gets repeated across time zones: Though it seems impossibly hard, the methodology was actually quite straightforward.

Twenty-one percent of Twitter users now follow more than 100 people — that's up from 7% last year — and 16% now have more than 100 followers, according to Sysomos, which looked at over a billion tweets from 20 million users in 2010 and compared them against data gathered in 2009. Twitter users in 2010 were much more likely to provide a bio (69%), detailed name (73%), location (82%) and website URL (44%) as part of their public profiles.

12 different ways of visualising Twitter data Some people think Twitter is all about short messages back and forth but we know better. It’s all about generating all sorts of data which can then be sliced and diced into interesting visualisations. Although there are a number of well known services providing user statistics (TwitterCounter, Tweet Stats, etc.), we wanted to delve a bit deeper than that. Here are some of our favourites. The Power of Twitter in Information Discovery It surprises me how many really smart people I meet still doubt the power of Twitter. It seems the urge to be a naysayer of Twitter is really strong for some. I think some of this stems from the early days of Twitter when it was presumed that it was a technology to tell people what you ate for lunch. Twitter never seemed to really take the offense in PR and marketing. I guess it wasn't in their DNA.

How Twitter Stores 250 Million Tweets a Day Using MySQL Jeremy Cole, a DBA Team Lead/Database Architect at Twitter, gave a really good talk at the O'Reilly MySQL conference: Big and Small Data at @Twitter, where the topic was thinking of Twitter from the data perspective. One of the interesting stories he told was of the transition from Twitter's old way of storing tweets using temporal sharding, to a more distributed approach using a new tweet store called T-bird, which is built on top of Gizzard, which is built using MySQL. Twitter's original tweet store: Temporally sharded tweets was a good-idea-at-the-time architecture. Temporal sharding simply means tweets from the same date range are stored together on the same shard. The problem is tweets filled up one machine, then a second, and then a third.

In his latest column for The New York Times Magazine, Bill Keller, The Times’s executive editor, likens clearing the way for his 13-year-old daughter to join Facebook to handing her “a pipe of crystal meth.” I can’t say I have ever tried crystal meth, but I do visit social networks on a regular basis. Twitter, which Mr. Keller says he believes could make us “stupid,” has become an irreplaceable part of my daily life; it augments how I report stories, socialize with friends and share and consume everything from store coupons to breaking news. Before I embraced the social flow of information on the Web, the bulk of my news came from the printed newspapers and magazines that arrived on my doorstep.
