The Top 10 Existential Movies of All Time

The Top 10 Existential Movies of All Time
Browsing through my DVD collection recently I realized that I have a fairly decent selection of what can be called 'existential movies' -- philosophical films that study the nature of existence and what it means to be alive. It's debatable as to what defines the 'quintessential' existential movie, but ultimately it must speak to the human condition and reframe it in such a way that the viewer gains an enhanced appreciation of their own existence and situation in life. These are the kinds of films that you find yourself reflecting back upon time and time again as you engage in your own day-to-day life, struggles and relationships. Thus, I present to you the top 10 existential movies of all time: 10. The Quiet Earth The best of the 'last man on Earth' movies, The Quiet Earth (1985) looks at human nature and the value of social relationships through a post-apocalyptic lens. 9. The movie also acknowledges the harsh realities of modern relationships. 8. 7. 6. 5. 4. 3. 2. 1.

Cricket Hill Collection Hand-marbled paper, gouache, and ink on paper by Sophie B. During Field Work Term, I would absolutely love to work with the Pittsburgh Pirates, a Major League Baseball team. In 2011, I fell in love with baseball, specifically Pirates baseball, and haven’t stopped since. I watch, listen to, or follow every game, gathering information about every pitcher, batter, and umpire that I can. The game just fascinates me, and one dream I have is to work in the front office for the Pirates, researching players and drawing up trades.

* Randomness as Meaning Introduction This article describes how, in our search for order and purpose in life, people sometimes assign meaning to events that are objectively random and devoid of meaning. Consider these two images — one dot pattern is random, the other isn't: One of the two images above shows a random pattern of dots, the other has been manipulated to resemble a random pattern but isn't really random. The Fifty Greatest Cult Movies of All Time It’s midnight somewhere. “Cult movie” is a hard thing to pin down. For the purposes of this list — celebrating the tenth anniversary of Donnie Darko — we’ve put a premium on the intensity and selectiveness of a movie’s appeal. We’ve also limited each director to one film.

Young girl who’s best friends with African wildlife Born in Africa to French wildlife photographer parents, Tippi Degré had a most unusual childhood. The young girl grew up in the African desert and developed an uncommon bond with many untamed animals including a 28-year old African elephant named Abu, a leopard nicknamed J&B, lion cubs, giraffes, an Ostrich, a mongoose, crocodiles, a baby zebra, a cheetah, giant bullfrogs, and even a snake. Africa was her home for many years and Tippi became friends with the ferocious animals and tribespeople of Namibia. As a young child, the French girl said, “I don’t have friends here. Because I never see children. So the animals are my friends.”

Wes Anderson Car Commercials: Director Releases Two Hyundai Commercials Wes Anderson has ventured into the least kitschy realm of directing: car commercials. But, somehow, this scalawag was able to add a pinch of oddball whimsy here, too. Hyundai released two commercials from the offbeat auteur to promote their new luxury vehicle, the Azera.

To Fall in Love With Anyone, Do This I Googled Dr. Aron’s questions; there are 36. We spent the next two hours passing my iPhone across the table, alternately posing each question. They began innocuously: “Would you like to be famous? The 15 Best Miramax Films Today, the indie world and the film world at large lost a giant in the field, watching Disney close the doors and turn the lights off on Miramax. As sad a day like today is, and as uncertain as the future is, we can still hold on to the memories. Most of them are now on Blu-ray. Or at least Laser Disc (because we all own one). Without further tears in our eyes, we’d like to remember Miramax for their 15 Best Films.

Nicos Poulantzas and the Capitalist State Nicos Poulantzas is a name that, today, is little known and seldom discussed out with certain academic circles. On the few occasions that the Greek Marxist is referenced by the organized Left, it is usually in relation to his public debate with Ralph Miliband on the nature of the State; or as an alleged proponent of Structural Marxism after Althusser. However, neither context provides a particularly accurate representation of this dynamic thinker: the Miliband debate only provides a small detail of Poulantzas’s rich investigations into the capitalist State; whilst reducing his lifelong political researches to the category of ‘Structural Marxism’ is inaccurate and unfair.
