The Top 10 Existential Movies of All Time

The Top 10 Existential Movies of All Time
Browsing through my DVD collection recently I realized that I have a fairly decent selection of what can be called 'existential movies' -- philosophical films that study the nature of existence and what it means to be alive. It's debatable as to what defines the 'quintessential' existential movie, but ultimately it must speak to the human condition and reframe it in such a way that the viewer gains an enhanced appreciation of their own existence and situation in life. These are the kinds of films that you find yourself reflecting back upon time and time again as you engage in your own day-to-day life, struggles and relationships. Thus, I present to you the top 10 existential movies of all time: 10. The Quiet Earth The best of the 'last man on Earth' movies, The Quiet Earth (1985) looks at human nature and the value of social relationships through a post-apocalyptic lens. 9. The movie also acknowledges the harsh realities of modern relationships. 8. 7. 6. 5. 4. 3. 2. 1.

- StumbleUpon Midnight in Paris Woody Allen’s latest places starving writer Owen Wilson in Paris with his fiancée, Rachel McAdams. Searching for inspiration for his incomplete novel, Owen begins taking strolls around the city at night where he discovers an unexpected group of people. I wish I could be more specific, but it would ruin the surprise. Know that it is brilliant, witty and full of mystique. 92% on Rotten Tomatoes (RT). Let the Right One In The best vampire movie ever made in my opinion. Watch Let the Right One In for FREE on Amazon Instant Video The Man From Earth Holy &#%@ this film’s plot is fascinating! Garden State This is my absolute favorite film. Waking Life It’s impossible for you to grasp Waking Life without actually watching it, but I’ll do my best to explain it. Watch Waking Life for FREE on Amazon Instant Video Closer This film is a rather dark, yet comedic story about the twisted relationships between Natalie Portman, Jude Law, Clive Owen and Julia Roberts. Wes Anderson Car Commercials: Director Releases Two Hyundai Commercials Wes Anderson has ventured into the least kitschy realm of directing: car commercials. But, somehow, this scalawag was able to add a pinch of oddball whimsy here, too. Hyundai released two commercials from the offbeat auteur to promote their new luxury vehicle, the Azera. For the non-vehicular inclined, the commercials serve as an unexpected appetizer before his sure-to-be adorable feature, "Moonrise Kingdom," which hits theaters May 25. [via Vulture]

(v. 2) af Steve Keen - Køb bogen hos SAXO.com Forlagets beskrivelse In this expanded and updated new edition, Keen builds on his scathing critique of conventional economic theory whilst explaining what mainstream economists cannot: why the crisis occurred, why it is proving to be intractable, and what needs to be done to end it. Illustrations Bibliotekernes beskrivelse Debunking Economics 2 exposes what many non-economists may have suspected and a minority of economists have long known: that economic theory is not only unpalatable, but also plain wrong. The 50 Scariest Movies of All Time The 50 Scariest Movies of All Time What is it about a perfectly done horror movie? You can't say there's a single way to do it: some use the time time-tested hot-chick-in-distress formula, some hinge on graphic displays of gore and disembowelment that make you recoil (even though keep watching, you sick bastard), and some simply shake you to your core...and in some cases drive you to therapy. Videos at the source Goddamn, I love horror movies Global Warming and Climate Change skepticism examined The 15 Best Miramax Films Today, the indie world and the film world at large lost a giant in the field, watching Disney close the doors and turn the lights off on Miramax. As sad a day like today is, and as uncertain as the future is, we can still hold on to the memories. Most of them are now on Blu-ray. Or at least Laser Disc (because we all own one). Without further tears in our eyes, we’d like to remember Miramax for their 15 Best Films. If you’re like me and Rob Hunter, your rental queue is already full. 15. The Pitch: Even if Rob Hunter doesn’t think Larry Clark’s harsh film about drug and sexual abandon amongst the youth in NYC is well acted, he’s wrong, and the movie is brilliant and challenging. 14. The Pitch: You probably haven’t seen this odd and creepy little flick, but if you have consider yourself one of the lucky few. 13. The Pitch: This film is mostly known for its twist, which is a shame, because the entire film is a thing of beauty. 12. 11.

Nicos Poulantzas and the Capitalist State Nicos Poulantzas is a name that, today, is little known and seldom discussed out with certain academic circles. On the few occasions that the Greek Marxist is referenced by the organized Left, it is usually in relation to his public debate with Ralph Miliband on the nature of the State; or as an alleged proponent of Structural Marxism after Althusser. However, neither context provides a particularly accurate representation of this dynamic thinker: the Miliband debate only provides a small detail of Poulantzas’s rich investigations into the capitalist State; whilst reducing his lifelong political researches to the category of ‘Structural Marxism’ is inaccurate and unfair. Overview Poulantzas identified hegemony as strategically specific to the capitalist mode of production (CMP). The Power Bloc The first thing to examine in relation to continued supremacy of the dominant classes over the dominated is the specific make-up of each respective ‘bloc’. Against Instrumentalism

6 Insane Discoveries That Science Can't Explain We like to feel superior to the people who lived centuries ago, what with their shitty mud huts and curing colds by drilling a hole in their skulls. But we have to give them credit: They left behind some artifacts that have left the smartest of modern scientists scratching their heads. For instance, you have the following enigmas that we believe were created for no other purpose than to fuck with future generations. The Voynich Manuscript The Mystery: The Voynich manuscript is an ancient book that has thwarted all attempts at deciphering its contents. It appears to be a real language--just one that nobody has seen before. Translation: "...and when you get her to put the tennis racket in her mouth, have her stand in a fountain for a while. There is not even a consensus on who wrote it, or even when it was written. Why Can't They Solve It? Could you? Don't even try. As you can imagine, proposed solutions have been all over the board, from reasonable to completely clownshit. Our Guess:
