The League of Moveable Type Project Naptha Alien | Typeset In The Future My third post about typography in sci-fi has been gestating for a while now. Indeed, it’s been slowly taking shape – you might say it’s been forming itself inside of me – for really quite some time. The opening credits for Alien are nothing short of a typographic masterpiece. You can watch them in their entirety on the Art Of The Title web site, but here’s the general gist: a slow, progressive disclosure of a disjointed, customized Futura reveals the movie’s central theme over 90 seconds of beautifully-spaced angular lettering. UPDATE: Susan Bradley (and others) have pointed out that this is much more like Helvetica Black than Futura. (Before I show you how it looks, I should provide a sizable caveat: I got a lot of grief following my Moon article for spoiling that movie’s central twist. Here we go. Can you tell what it is yet? It’s looking pretty angular. And beautifully mirrored, at least along the y-axis. Well, that was unexpected. WAIT A MINUTE. Oh, no, I was wrong. WAIT ANOTHER MINUTE.

La typographie de Fanette Mellier au cinéma : pointypo– Fait peu commun pour être signalé, Fanette Mellier vient de réaliser une typographie et un accompagnement graphique pour le film de Riad Sattouf, Jacky au royaume des filles. L’alphabet & l’emblème sont attribués à Bubunne, le pays imaginaire. Fanette Mellier:Mon idée était de faire, en accord avec la demande de Riad, un alphabet qui puisse faire penser intuitivement à une typographie non latine, qui donne une impression d’étrangeté tout en restant lisible. Il y a aussi une référence aux toiles d’araignées, et aux coiffes tressées des femmes. Village: Frauen Frauen is Lucas Sharp’s ode to German calligraphy. The script style is based on some lettering Lucas found on the cover of an almanac of Berlin debutantes (!) published in 1945 titled, Die schönsten Frauen der Welt: The Most Beautiful Women in the World. The Roman is partially based on the calligraphy of Friedrich Neugebauer, and partly Lucas’s own creation. Frauen Roman and Script share a common weight, x-height, and nib angle, and when used together behave as if the same unabashedly German calligrapher penned them both in the same sitting.
