Interior Styling Wednesdays: Displaying Dishes Do you have pretty dishes that belong outside of your cupboards for all to see? I think we all do! Today's post is all about accessorizing with your existing dish collections. renske’s minimalist tote bag A talented seamstress with a mission, Renske Solkesz decided to create her own wardrobe after finding herself frustrated with high fashion prices. When we saw her chic and modern wardrobe creations, we asked if she’d be willing to create and share a fun accessory tutorial with us. I’m super excited about what she’s come up with: an amazing self-closing utilitarian tote! I’m a huge fan of the graphic contrast and the leather and rivet details. Like her fashion designs, this tote is made from inexpensive materials, yet looks totally luxe. I’m halfway out the door to the fabric store already! CLICK HERE for the full how-to after the jump! When I designed this bag, I wanted to integrate the grip/straps in a more functional way with the rest of the bag. A friend of mine called it a “yin yang bag,” which is pretty accurate, I think. seesaw.: joe schmelzer. I couldn't resist posting these interiors seen over at Desire to Inspire. For one thing they're completely gorgeous — that could be the staircase of my dreams, and the kitchen too. But also? They're photographed by the talented Joe Schmelzer (and I can't help but giggle when I hear that name, because my maiden name is Melzer)... Beach Houses Series #4 - Hamptons House Style I can't do a series on beach houses without discussing my favorite beach house ever (or my favorite movie house ever, because they are both the same) - the house from the movie "Something's Gotta Give." For those of you who haven't heard of this movie because you have been living on the moon for the past five years or you have been kidnapped by the Taliban and are wearing a burka - the movie stars Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson and a Hamptons house where most of the action takes place. In fact, the house should take top billing over Keaton and Nicholson. Years later, it's not the script that stands out, it's the Hamptons house itself. The first time I ever heard about the house was the night the movie premiered. So what's left to discuss about the Something's Gotta Give house? Contrast is the number one key design element in the house. The second most important element in the design, after contrast, is the blue and white rug. What about the furnishings?
pretty. little. world.: design I just can't help myself from collecting pictures of beautiful bathrooms. While it's often the simplest room in the house, if it's done well, there's something that's kind of timeless and stunning about the space. Yesterday I was thinking about how our house is nearly getting to the point where we'll only have to do little things here and there, as time and money allow; many of the large cumbersome projects are out of the way. But... I don't think there's a right or wrong answer to that; some people just kind of know when they've found someplace to really settle into, and others maybe have to keep moving around a little bit. Pr:SB update: weathered wood headboard | Happy Mundane | Jonathan Lo Remember that weathered wood wall from Hilary Swank’s Manhattan apartment, featured in Elle Decor last fall? Well those gorgeous walls have been haunting me. Therefore it should come as no surprise that I needed to have something like that in my life. Unfortunately, where I’m currently living, there just isn’t easy access to a healthy supply of reclaimed wood (hello new construction So Cal Suburbia world… old barns? In my head this seemed like it would be a pretty easy project, and in reality, it kind of was, except for the most important part, getting that “weathered wood” effect. Now that the wood part was handled, next came the “weather-ing”. I bought two large deep plastic containers (about the size you’d use to hold a good amount of soup), poured the vinegar in (just used plain white distilled) and tried two different packs of steel wool. Next, I applied the mixture liberally to the wood with a cheapie brush. I finally put all the pieces together and attached it to the bed frame.
