Design a Rocket-Powered Retrofuturistic Digital Illustration Retrofuturism is a topic that has always fascinated me. In this tutorial, we'll go through the steps of recreating my own experiment in this style. After making the 3D typography in Illustrator, we'll use Photoshop to create an out-of-this-world digital illustration on the topic of space exploration. Introduction As Wikipedia puts it, "retrofuturistic design is a return to, and an enthusiasm for, the depictions of the future produced in the past (most often the 1920s through 1960s), both in science fiction and in nonfiction futurism of the time, which often seem dated by modern standards." This is what we're doing; a retro interpretation of the future based on the theme of space exploration. Video Tutorial Our video editor Gavin Steele has created this video tutorial to compliment this text + image tutorial. Step 1 Open Illustrator, start a new web document and get this font, called Airstream. Step 2 It's time to add the 3D effect. Step 3 Start up Photoshop and get this galaxy photo. Step 4

Making Complex Selections in Photoshop - DesignFestival » For Web Design Trends Making precise selections in Photoshop is an essential skill that every designer needs. As a print designer, you will find yourself using selections to remove objects from their background to place within ads. As a web designer, you might extract an image and place it on a website with no background. If you are a photographer, you might make a selection to remove blemishes or other unwanted features from an image. You can’t get around it; everyone uses selections, and if you make excellent selections, you’ll end up with excellent work. So, what do you do when you have something that is extremely difficult to select with normal selection tools? Even with the masking and channels, you can’t make a precise selection consistently. You can try the quick selection tool, which does a great job of making a selection of the bulk of the image, but making a more refined selection is difficult with this method. In comes Refine Mask to the rescue. We can fix this by using the Smart Radius Slider.

Designing for responsiveness Designing for responsive websites can be a bit challenging at first because the process is so different. As designers, we’ve gotten used to building pixel-perfect mockups as our web blueprints. But responsive design takes a different approach. A designer’s role is no longer to produce a mockup and then pass it off to the developer because responsive design is not just a two step process, it is a series of revisions. Most of which are made in the browser. It is a collaborative effort between the designer and developer, no longer two separate tasks. Here are some tips and a general workflow to make the transition from designing static sites to designing responsive ones a little easier. Knowing your viewports Before starting any project it is important to determine your viewports. Planning ahead Sketching can be your best friend. You will quickly realize that not all of the content may fit in the smaller viewports. Yup, those are my actual scribbles. Wireframes and mockups The browser Mockups

Create Elegant, Glassy, 3D Typography in Photoshop and Illustrator In today’s tutorial, we will demonstrate how to create elegant, glassy, 3D typography using Photoshop and Illustrator. For this project, I used my company logo. Feel free to apply this effect to any logo, text, or shape. Let’s get started! Step 1 Open the file "LOGO.fh11" from the download file with Illustrator or open your own. Step 2 As you can see I have imported my logo, with a previous gradient grayscale already applied. Step 3 It is very important not to forget to use the Layer panel. Step 4 Insert 2 new layers, through the layer panel > duplicate, and rename them to "LOGO FRONT B" and "SLOGAN FRONT B". Step 5 Duplicate the logo and slogan. Step 6 Open the Transform panel. Step 7 Next, apply a rotation of 17 degrees. Step 8 Hide the layers "FRONT A", from the layer panel. Step 9 Select LOGO FRONT B and change the fill from gradient to solid color. Step 10 Delete the stroke by clicking the stroke icon. Step 11 Apply a solid color, for the layer SLOGAN FRONT B. Step 12 Step 13 Step 14 Step 15 Step 16
