What I Learned From Susan Burton, a Modern-Day Harriet Tubman There once lived a woman with deep brown skin and black hair who freed people from bondage and ushered them to safety. She welcomed them to safe homes and offered food, shelter, and help reuniting with family and loved ones. She met them wherever they could be found and organized countless others to provide support and aid in various forms so they would not be recaptured and sent back to captivity. Effective Out-of-School Time Reading Programs Proficient readers often take the act of reading for granted. Whether we're glancing at street signs, reading the morning paper, or reviewing e-mail, reading is just one more thing we do as we go about our daily routines. For many children, however, learning to read is far from simple. Results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) indicate that a large percentage of students are not meeting reading standards. In 2003, just 31 percent of fourth-graders, and 32 percent of eighth-graders, performed at or above the proficient level in reading (National Center for Education Statistics, 2004).

How to Put Free Ebooks on Your Amazon Kindle The Amazon Kindle is a great ebook reader, but it's tightly tied to Amazon's ecosystem. If you have a Fire tablet or a smartphone, you can download other e-reading apps to beef up your library, but with the E Ink Kindles (including the Kindle$69.99 at Amazon, the Kindle Paperwhite$119.99 at Amazon, and the Kindle Voyage$199.99 at Amazon), you're pretty much tied to getting your content directly from Amazon. Well, sort of. Using a bit of free software, you can take ebooks in the EPUB, Mobi, and PDF formats and zap them over to your Kindle lickety-split. Here's how to do it. EmailThe easiest way to put books on your Kindle is to do it via email.

Book Talk: Divergent by Veronica Roth Since I began teaching I have dreamed of sharing one of my favorite novels with my students and experiencing that excitement and anticipation that is associated with diving into a new world of characters and places. Unfortunately, I was never able to make that happen because of a lack of time, not having the resources, and plenty of other excuses that I made. All that changed, however, when I stumbled across this amazing organization, First Book. First Book is an organization dedicated to providing books to children in need. If you teach in a Title I or low income school, you can sign up on their website to apply for book grants or shop in their marketplace for heavily discounted books for your students. I have been extremely lucky to have be awarded three separate book grants from First Book.
