Bathing machines The bathing machine was a device, popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, to allow people to change out of their usual clothes, possibly change into swimwear and then wade in the ocean at beaches. Bathing machines were roofed and walled wooden carts rolled into the sea. Some had solid wooden walls; others had canvas walls over a wooden frame. For example, sending a fax, writing in cursive (with a pen) and talking on any phone with a cord (and twirling it around my fingers) are all things that kids born in 2011 might never have the opportunity to experience. I remember back in the days when people would say, “I wish I had my camera with me today, I could have taken some great pictures.” Now that practically everyone has a smartphone, we all have our cameras with us everywhere we go. That is evident in these photographs taken at exactly the right moment. The photography we see these days is phenomenal. Sometimes “at the right moment” photography is achieved with high-speed photography, and sometimes it is achieved from just being in the right place at the right time.

The quality that these were restored to is nothing short of astounding, capturing every detail and quirk of each prisoner. Shadow & Ball Carefully note the trajectory of the ball and its shadow. Does the ball appear to rise above the floor of the checkerboard pattern? Is there any ambiguity in the trajectory of the ball? Change the shadow to a diagonal shadow. What happens when you combine shadows? What happens when there is no shadow? So What ís Going On? Without a shadow the ball's motion is ambiguous. Your visual system can not decide between the two simplest possibilities for the movement of the ball. Actually, there are an infinite variety of possible paths for the ball to take, but your visual system selects only two simple paths. Faced with an ambiguous situation, your visual system looks for any clue that can resolve the ambiguity.
