Cabbies stranding short-fare passengers Taxi users are being told to know their rights this Christmas after an Auckland woman was illegally refused by six drivers because her journey from the Viaduct was too short. The Taxi Federation says the entertainment district is one of the worst places in the country for drivers fobbing off potential fares - possibly thousands of unreported cases a year. It is illegal for drivers to reject a passenger because the trip is too short, although there are certain circumstances - including safety - when they can turn down a fare. Penalties for refusing a fare can include a $400 fine. Victoria Griffin left her public relations firm's Christmas party at 12.30am on Saturday. There were plenty of taxis at the rank underneath the Hobson St flyover, but six in a row refused to take her to Eden Tce. One driver locked his back door to stop her getting in, while another told her to walk home. "I certainly wasn't drunk to the point where they'd turn me away," said Ms Griffin. - NZ Herald

The Securities Commission gave the Hanover co-founder a $1000-a-week allowance after freezing his New Zealand assets. But that's not enough for Mr Hotchin, and the Herald understands he has sought to increase that limit to between $6000 and $7000 so he can pay for rent, living costs, a hire car, and private school fees for three children. A High Court legal meeting will be held today. Mr Hotchin's lawyer, Bruce Stewart, QC, said last week that his client was supporting seven people, and could not live on $1000. As well as negotiating his allowance, Mr Hotchin's legal team will today seek access to a report by forensic accountant David Crichton, which served as the grounds for the court order against him. The commission has refused to let Mr Hotchin or his lawyers see the document or discuss its contents. Earlier, he said he would appeal against the commission's freeze.

Going to the beach? Keep an eye out for sharks Warm early summer seas around northern New Zealand are attracting increasing numbers of sharks. Sightings have been reported off Tauranga, and one marine expect says sharks are probably present off most sandy coastlines. Department of Conservation marine scientist Clinton Duffy believed sharks were looking for food or to drop their pups. Mr Duffy said sharks could be present anywhere in the upper half of the North Island where there were sandy open swimming beaches. "The Rangitoto channel, the Waitemata Harbour, the Motuihe channel, Tamaki through to Thames, all up around North Cape, Ninety Mile Beach, Raglan, Piha, Muriwai, everywhere." He advised: "I would say to people that if you see a shark in the water, get to the beach quickly and quietly without drawing any more attention to yourself than you already have." "I was bringing up a barracuda when I saw it suddenly come up out of the depths and attack the barracuda." Once was about 2m, and the other was about 1.4m.

A La Nina summer has been predicted by meteorologists - which is a weather pattern New Zealand has not experienced for 21 years. MetService's Bob McDavitt said weather monitoring instruments were now registering a situation that had not been seen since December 1988. "We're getting the same patterns and they're pretty rare patterns so we look to previous summers as indicators as to what to expect this year." This weather pattern is identical to the 1988-1989 La Nina summer. "But it's most likely we'll get the heavy rain of the 1989 summer, if our indicators are correct." If these indicators are correct, the upper North Island can expect torrential rain and damage which the then Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries at the time compared to the destruction of 1988's Cyclone Bola. However, Mr McDavitt said these previous summers should only be used as indicators.
