In contrast to decision-making procedures that evolved from psychoanalytic, existential, and rational approaches to counseling, behaviorally based strategies have been subjected to considerable experimental scrutiny. The data-gathering proclivity of behaviorists will soon become apparent. The principles and procedures of behavioral counseling have already been surveyed in chapters 2 and 3. General Differences Between Behavioral Counseling and Other Approaches In contrast to the psychoanalytic approach covered in chapter 7, behavioral counseling is characterized by a strong emphasis on client goal attainment and a clear specification of the client and counselor behaviors that are presumed to lead to it. Differences between existential and behavioral approaches to counseling are not quite as extreme.
