Beautiful Baked Apple Roses

Beautiful Baked Apple Roses
TipHero I don’t know about you, but when fall hits, all I want are pumpkin spice drinks to warm up with, hot stew in the crock pot waiting for me when I get out of work, and the smell of baked apple treats in the air as often as possible. And while classic fall favorites, like apple pie and apple crisp, are delicious, I always get excited by the prospect of a new apple treat I’ve never tried before. This particular treat has exploded all over Pinterest this year, and with good reason. Apple roses are easy to make, have an absolutely gorgeous presentation, and best of all, taste amazing.

Empanada Dough recipe This was pretty good. I used my food processor to make the dough with frozen butter. I used apple cider vinegar instead of white -- it was all I had. I was making a sort of jamaican beef patty and samosa hybrid out of this, so I added about a tablespoon of curry powder and a little nooch (brewers or nutritional yeast) to the dough for flavor and color. I was out of traditional eggs, so I made a flax egg instead. Dough was slightly crumbly but not hard to work with at all. Hello Design Wall - You Are A Lifesaver! I have been on the lookout for some time for a “new” technique for strip piecing that would yield results which appear somewhat complicated as well as time-consuming. Well, I have found it and I want to share it with you. I think Sophie would enjoy this project too. After watching Jenny Doan from the Missouri Quilt Company demonstrate a technique developed by “3 Dudes Quilting” from Arizona, I couldn’t wait to try it out. I knew that my quilting design wall was going to be used a great deal for this project because it would be crucial for the blocks to be laid out in a particular order and stay in place until picked up to be sewn. If you want to give this method a try and get the visual result I did with my batiks, here is what you can do. Make strip sets consisting of five fabrics, cut 3” x WOF. Sew these five strips together in the above order, alternating the two ends from which you start sewing. Pin each corner to eliminate slippage and sew a ¼” seam all around the outer edge.

Meyer Lemon Tart | A Cup of Jo Today, our month of food bloggers’ “famous recipes” continues with this incredible lemon tart. How pretty would it be to serve to friends this fall? Julia from Sassy Kitchen shares how to make it… Meyer Lemon Tart (With Gluten-Free Crust) by Julia Gartland of Sassy Kitchen Lemons are my all-time favorite staple. I love lemon bars and tarts as much as the next person, but I loved the idea of doing this with buckwheat flour for a little rustic touch. Recipe: Meyer Lemon Tart You’ll need: 1/2 cup Meyer lemon juice (about 2 to 3 lemons) 1/4 cup granulated sugar 6 tbsp butter, chilled & cubed 2 large eggs 2 large egg yolks Before juicing the lemons, zest two of them into a medium sized mixing bowl. In a saucepan, combine sugar, butter and lemon juice. Once combined well, add mixture back to the saucepan over medium-low heat. Then, immediately pour through the sieve, pushing all the curd through (use your spatula to scape the curd off the bottom of the bowl). In a stand mixer, add heavy cream.

Vegan Chai Ice Cream I got addicted to chai in college when I discovered that a local coffee shop near my university served my favorite brand of spiced chai for $1.50. And it was a large chai latte, too! Somehow now chai tea lattes cost around $4 on average, so I rarely get them. It’s just principle. I’m all for treating yourself, but when you can make the same thing at home for half the price, I can rarely bring myself to do it! Nonetheless, my love affair with chai began and it really never stopped. This recipe is simple as it requires about 10 ingredients (give or take a spice) and doesn’t require any boiling and chilling, which saves you time. From there the chai flavor is added with a concentrated brewed chai tea and dry chai tea spices. The traditional spices in chai are cinnamon, ginger, clove, cardamom and black pepper. Exciting news! Q: Do you like recipe videos? Once you add all your ingredients to your blender, just blend until creamy and smooth. Oh, I was SO pleased with how this turned out!

Pear and Nutella Tart This month, we’re featuring delicious desserts — recipes you can whip up for springtime (!) entertaining. First up, a beautiful tart with juicy ripe pears and, you guessed it, Nutella. It looks fancy, but it’s surprisingly easy to make. Helene Dujardin of the food blog Tartelette shares how to make it… Pear and Nutella Tart by Helene Dujardin of Tartelette This recipe reminds me of being home in my grandmother’s kitchen. This tart comes together in a pinch if you have leftover pie crust or a pre-made one. You’ll need: Puff pastry (For fresh puff pastry, I like this recipe) 2 large eggs 1/2 cup Nutella 1/2 cup whole milk 1/2 cup heavy cream 3-4 pears depending on size, peeled, cored and sliced Line the bottom of a tart pan (rectangular or 8-inch round) with the puff pastry. Preheat the oven to 350F. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs with the Nutella until smooth. Pour the cream into the pastry crust. Thank you so much, Helene! P.S. (Recipe and photos by Helene Dujardin.

Homemade Apple Cider Vinegar — SUSTAIN MY CRAFT HABIT In addition to the great taste and cost savings (making your own can be virtually free if you use your own apples or peels and cores which you would otherwise dispose of), unfiltered apple cider vinegar is thought to have a number of beneficial effects including antebacterial properties, may lower blood sugar, help with weight loss, promote heart health and fight against cancer (source: Authoritynutrition.com). It is important to note however, that the following recipe does not technically make apple cider vinegar for which apple juice rather than apple chunks are used in the fermentation process. To make your own vinegar you will need only three ingredients plus three supplies: approximately 6 large pesticide-free apples, thoroughly washed and cut into quarters2-2.5 tbsp of granulated sugar2-2.5 cups of filtered or boiled and cooled waterone-quart (preferably glass) jarone rubber bandone coffee filter, cheesecloth or clean kitchen cloth Fill the jar 3/4 full with the apples.
