Do It Yourself Aquaponics. The knowledge to feed the multitudes

SoCal Aquaponics - Commercial Aquaponics is a large-scale commercial producer of organically farm-raised fish and greenhouse vegetables that will be located 60miles East of Los Angeles. Our production facility will use an eco-friendly recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) to grow quality tilapia, shrimp and vegetables that will supply the local and foreign market with the much needed and wanted American Grown fish and vegetables. Current intensive indoor aquaculture technology actually got it roots from technology first developed to grow fin fish like Tilapia, Stripped Bass, Trout and many other types of fish. When one first enters a modem aquaponics growing facility the first impression would be, this is just like a fin fish set up. Advantages of integrated production: Higher revenues can be achieved by farmers who can increase farm productivity and differentiate production with limited investment. new challenges for aquaculture and aquaponics development . Plants are started in peat pellets in trays outside the system.

How to Build an Aquaponics system: Gardening with Fish Here's a good guide to building a home made hydroponic aquaponics system by Patti Moreno the Garden Girl. Aquaponics is the growing of fish and plants in a controlled environment. It works on the basis that when fish live in a tank, the water starts to fill up with their waste which can make them ill. This dirty water is then transferred to your seedlings which are growing hydroponically (without water). The plants suck up all of the nutrients from the waste water thus cleansing it for the fish. Cleaning out the pet fish's tank can be such a chore so this could be the perfect solution for you! The example on the video is an indoor system where you can oggle at your pretty fishes through glass while they feed your seedlings with poo but it could be easily be transferred outside into an opaque tank/pond or your seedlings could be kept by a window. DIY Radial Flow Filter for Aquaponics Radial Flow Settlers are a type of filter that removes all the gunk and fish poop that occurs in a recirculated aquaponics system. Handy if you have overstocked your fish tank or over-fed the fish as the water quality suddenly gets murky and is less than pristine. How does it work? Fish effluent enters the center of the tank vertically and flows down through the stilling well, causing low-density solids to be easily settled out of the water column as they settle at the bottom of the tank. Filtered water overflows a weir at the top of the settler into a collection trough where the clean water is sent off to the grow beds. Commercial Radial Flow Settlers are expensive to buy. Build your own Filter Cheaply Thankfully you can build your own for under $100 if you’re reasonably handy and have some time to spare. The flash animation on this page shows the principles involved. Fish solids as they enter the barrel will swirl and drop down and eventually sink to the bottom of the barrel.

Growbed Guide So what can you use for a growbed? The short answer is almost anything, but there are a number of things you should take into consideration, including whether your growbed will be located inside or outside. It goes without saying that the growbed needs to be waterproof, but you need to make absolutely certain of this. It also needs to be strong enough to hold the media and the water - depending on the size of the growbed this could equate to a fairly significant amount of pressure... an important consideration if you decide to make a growbed yourself. Any watertight, food-safe, fish-safe container can be used, and depending on the size of your whole aquaponics system that will leave you with several choices. •Small systems can use food containers, plastic containers from the DIY store or IKEA, wooden boxes with a suitable liner - almost anything that will fit the size of your fish tank.
