Play The 7 Modes in 7 Days (Tabs Incl.) Photo by Marta Monleón Modes are used in all kinds of musical styles like Jazz, Rock, Metal, Flamenco, etc. They create a certain mood or feel to your playing. If you feel like you are stuck playing solos using just Major/Minor or Pentatonic/Blues scales all the time, you’re ready to call on the modes and dive a little deeper. When I first got introduced to modes I was a little bit overwhelmed, but also excited to explore this whole new world of boundless possibilities. I soon realized it’s all about the journey and not the destination, so enjoy the process! There are 7 modes which can be derived from the major scale: 1 – Ionian 2 – Dorian 3 – Phrygian 4 – Lydian 5 – Mixolydian 6 – Aeolian 7 – Locrian Each mode starts and stops on a different note within the major scale. In this post we take the C major scale to explain the modes, but you can derive the 7 modes from any major scale in any key. I challenge you to understand the basics and work your way through each mode in 7 days.

The Sky Blue Mushroom It looks like it could be something offered to Alice just before she makes a journey in to Wonderland but this sky blue mushroom is not a product of the imagination of Lewis Caroll. It can be found on both islands of New Zealand – and bizarrely enough in a few places in India. The sky blue mushroom does not have a common name other than, well, sky blue mushroom but if you have a moment for a real tongue twister its scientific name is Entoloma hochstetteri. The mushroom appeared briefly along with five other native fungi on a set of stamps issued by the New Zealand government in 2002 and it can also be seen on the reverse of the country’s $50 note which was released in 1990. The fruiting body (or basidiocarp) of the mushroom is usually found among moss, ferns or fallen leaves and the cap grow up to around four centimeters in diameter. Although the mushroom is not edible it is not known if it is poisonous or not – no one seems to have tried to eat it so far in its history.

The Fox Is Black » Bach’s Cantata 147, ‘Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring’ Played On a Giant Wooden Xylophone In a Forest This is probably the largest, least creative title for a post ever, but it’s also one of the most descriptive as well. The video is a commercial by DOCOMO for the Touch Wood SH-08C, a limited edition phone of which there are only 15,000 being made. But honestly I could care less about the phone, this commercial is a thousand times more cool. By combining lord knows how many pieces of wood, they were able to make a long, downhill track that was able to reproduce Bach’s Cantata 147, Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring. This is a pretty phenomenal achievement and a beautiful piece of art.

Pictures of Clouds and Sunsets - What a Wonderful World Long’s Peak – Sunset Pictures of Clouds and Sunsets credit: David Evenson These pictures of clouds, nature and landscape are really inspirational. Clouds are created when rising air, through expansion, cools to the point where some of the water vapor molecules “clump together” faster than they are torn apart by their thermal energy. Some of that (invisible) water vapor condenses to form (visible) cloud droplets or ice crystals. After cloud droplets form, one of two things happen. Either they collide with each other and grow by joining together to such a large size that they fall to the ground as rain or snow, or they evaporate and change back into water vapor. In any case the beauty is impossible to ignore and our Grand Architect surely has an excellent eye for design. Hint: Use “J” and “K” keys to navigate from picture to picture.
