ICTwise An algorithm is a method for doing something expressed in clearly defined steps. All computer programming involves problem solving. As we progress towards creating our own computer programs we need to find away of organizing our ideas before we write any code. Whilst his may be done in writing alone, that isn't usually the easiest way to see our way through a problem logically. The best method for doing this is to use visual diagrams known as flowcharts. Look at this flowchart showing a simplified process for making a cup of tea. The diagram makes the process much easier to understand than writing alone. Brain Images Reveal the Secret to Higher IQ New research suggests that the layer of insulation coating neural wiring in the brain plays a critical role in determining intelligence. In addition, the quality of this insulation appears to be largely genetically determined, providing further support for the idea that IQ is partly inherited. The findings, which result from a detailed study of twins’ brains, hint at how ever-improving brain-imaging technology could shed light on some of our most basic characteristics. “The study answers some very fundamental questions about how the brain expresses intelligence,” says Philip Shaw, a child psychiatrist at the National Institute of Mental Health, in Bethesda, MD, who was not involved in the research. The neural wires that transmit electrical messages from cell to cell in the brain are coated with a fatty layer called myelin. Thompson and his colleagues took DTI scans of 92 pairs of fraternal and identical twins.
Algorithm Browse by alphabet: A computer programming term. This is the name given to a "defined set of steps that can be used to complete a task". For example there are 'algorithms' worked out for sorting a list efficiently. A computer programmer can buy a book of algorithms so they not need to re-invent the wheel when they have to code for a job that has already been worked out. Note: Algorithms are not computer code, so a programmer using 'C++' can use the same algorithm as someone programming in 'Java', they use the same steps, just coded differently. All rivers have a source, and at the start the river may be a mere trickle of water which over time cuts deep into the landscape, changing the landscape forever, and as the river makes its journey to the sea, the river grows in strength and volume, impacting the environment around it, and most rivers will ultimately lead to the wide open sea. The process of the development of a river can be applied to the process involved in developing skills in our students. Social media criticism of Kate and Gerry McCann, posted on the 10th anniversary of their three-year-old daughter going missing in Praia da Luz, Portugal, has included calls for them to be charged with child neglect, and unsubstantiated allegations that they accidentally killed Madeleine. In apparent references to the fact that Madeleine went missing from the family’s holiday apartment while her mother and father dined at a tapas restaurant 50 yards away, successive twitter users have called the McCanns “vile”, “negligent” parents who “have only themselves to blame”. The McCanns – who with their friends had been checking on their daughter every half- hour, have been called the ‘McScams’ and accused of lying about Madeleine’s disappearance. The McCanns also had their formal “arguido” (suspect) status lifted by Portugese police in July 2008.
