Is it the lack of PR, no heir to the design house or were they just bad designers? While certain designers of the past are remembered today for their ingenuity or are attributed with the "invention" of a particular garment, such as Mary Quant and the miniskirt, scores of designers--like Redfern, Lucile or Mainbocher--who were widely influential in their time have seemingly been forgotten. The task of resurrecting these legacies thus falls upon the fashion historian, so sit back for a mini fashion history lesson of 10 fashion designers you've probably never heard of but should definitely know. Can Feminists Like Fashion? - Forbes Céline 2012 Runway Feminism and fashion have always had a rocky relationship, a point hammered home in an article in Ms. magazine’s January issue, “If The Clothes Fit: A Feminist Take On Fashion.” The piece explores the tumultuous role that fashion has historically played in gender politics—both serving as a medium for the advancement of women, and as a weapon of restraint. It even goes so far as to dub it the only rule of fashion. BIG call. Especially coming from H&M, a brand that consistently cops flack for its unsustainable fast-fashion model.

H&M is making its stance on the ethical treatment of animals in the industry very clear in its latest collaboration with Humane Society International. After running a competition that invited innovaters to think of more ways to recycle clothes and be kind to the environment, the fashion giant is once again showing its compassion as they work to protect the furry little guys used for sourcing wool, hair and down, and push for a total ban on animal testing globally. H&M sustainability business expert Madelene Ericsson says, "Animal Welfare is important to us at H&M and we want to contribute to improved animal welfare practices in our industry… We hope that other companies will be inspired to do likewise." The collaboration aims to bring about change, urging certain countries to enforce national legislative bans on live-plucking, mulesing (the removal of strips of wool and skin from a live sheep) and force-feeding. hm.com/au

H&M's 'Biggest Store Ever' Feels Like a Full-Fledged Department Store On Wednesday at noon, H&M opened its 13th store in New York City with the headline-generating detail that it's the retailer's largest store in the world. Internationalisation is a top priority for European and American fashion retailers alike. One leading fast-fashion retailer who has been hard at work ensuring that their main brand becomes a globally dominant name is Hennes & Mauritz AB (H&M). According to the 'Apparel insight deck' report published by Planet Retail, retailers need to continue expanding into international markets and 'reduce dependence on their home markets' in order to stay ahead of competitors.
