Shopgate Raises $7M To Help Retailers Maximize Mobile Storefronts And Sales Mobile e-commerce startup Shopgate announced its Series B funding round today, which it revealed to TechCrunch totals $7 million in an interview. The Germany and Palo Alto-based company offers retailers custom native app and mobile web development for their online stores, which Shopgate co-founder Andrea Anderheggen says can help retailers increase their sell-through rates on mobile by between 5 and 15 percent on average, depending on whether they’re starting with responsive design-based websites or just traditional web commerce pages. Where Shopgate differs from other solutions is that it integrates with popular web-based e-commerce platform provider APIs, like Magento, which means that they’re pretty much plug-and-play with most of the online store backends that retailers are already using. “What we’ve seen is that mobile commerce will become a huge reality,” he said. “What we saw is that consumers have different preferences,” Anderheggen explained further.

In a really cool home-turned-office in Bangalore, a team of brilliant people have turned a phenomenon that is unique to the country into a booming business. That phenomenon is missed calls. While that might not sound like big business, once you realize why this is a prevalent behavior in India, it will make perfect sense. It’s kind of like the behavior of paging someone with “911” back in the day, as if to say “call me immediately.” The service that the company provides is provisioning a phone number that advertisers and companies like Disney and Gillette can plaster on billboards and newspaper ads, allowing people to call the number and disconnect without getting charged. Calling The World: Vox.io Just Might Be The Next Euro Startup Sensation A European company by the name of Skype taught the world that enabling people to make free voice and video calls over the Internet would be an enticing offer to hundreds of millions of users, and make for a great business at the same time. Now, a Euro startup called Vox.io plans to challenge them by envisioning how digital telephony should work in 2012 and beyond. They provide a simple tool that lets people make free calls to other vox.io users from their desktop browser, or their iPhone (app link). The startup, which hails from Slovenia, stands out because it has built its service to fit nicely into the current Web ecosystem, moving away from plugins, desktop apps and the like, with modern real-time and mobile communication trends squarely in the back of founder Tomaž Štolfa’s mind. This differs from the path chosen by the likes of Skype, Viber, fring, JAJAH and Rebtel, mind you. The company plans to generate revenue from calls to traditional telephony and the delivery of SMS messages.
