Create Now Create Now serves vulnerable kids ages 2-21 who have been abused, neglected, abandoned, orphaned, are left homeless, runaways, teen parents, substance abusers, victims of domestic violence, children of prisoners, gang members or incarcerated. The youth we serve come from poverty-stricken families with histories of violence, substance abuse, or neglect. These "forgotten children" are tucked away in group homes, shelters, detention facilities, special centers and schools throughout the Southern California region, under the radar of the general public. We have served around 35,000 of the neediest youth in the region in 18 years. We've developed a network of 100 partner youth agencies like shelters, group homes and detention facilities, and an extended database of over 1,000 youth facilities throughout Southern California that enables us to match volunteers with youth in need right in their own neighborhoods, based on the youths' ages, genders, challenges and other preferences.
Mentoring In 2006, Fortune and the U.S. State Department launched the Global Women Leaders Mentoring Partnership. The program brings rising-star women from developing countries to the U.S. each May to shadow participants of Fortune‘s Most Powerful Women Summit. We then follow them as they “pay it forward” back in their home countries. The program begins with an orientation in Washington, D.C., where mentees interface with women leaders in government, business, academic, civil society and the media. Participants then relocate to the offices of a top American female executive for an onsite mentorship assignment, in which each woman shadows their mentor and learns from the best practices of their host company. Le 12 janvier 2010, un tremblement de terre de magnitude 7.0 a frappé la ville de Port-au-Prince à Haïti. L'Épidémie de choléra en octobre 2010, fait également ressortir la problématique de l'eau potable et la vulnérabilité des personnes vivant dans des camps. La communauté OpenStreetMap peut aider la réponse humanitaire en cartographiant à partir de l'imagerie satellitaire (ou d'autres sources) et en collectant et centralisant les référentiels cartographiques existants. Hungry for Solutions: Can the Youth Fix the Future? On a recent late summer morning in Portland, Oregon, I walked past the downtown farmers' market, where vendors were setting up their lush displays of fruits and vegetables. Food was on my mind, but for a different reason. I was on my way to a forum for young people about how they could help fight world hunger. The Mercy Corps, a global humanitarian organization headquartered in Oregon, hosted the Portland Youth Summit as part of its Global Citizens Corps. According to Erin Thomas, who served with the Peace Corps before working with Mercy Corps, the organization is increasingly looking to young people to help find solutions for global problems such as hunger. As the panel of experts explained to a full auditorium, hunger is a multifaceted problem with no easy fixes. I couldn't help but think that teachers who bring a topic such as hunger into the classroom create the perfect setup for interdisciplinary learning.
