Home Page SHAKE TABLE A shake table can be used to test the resistance of structures to seismic shaking. It can also be used to demonstrate the sensitivity of structures of different heights to the frequency of the ground motion. The shake table pictured below, which was designed and built by John Lahr with expert advice from Tom Tompkins. It is based on a lightweight platform that is constrained to move in just one direction. The platform is made from a 10 inch by 10 inch piece of foam-core board. Hollow metal tubes are connected to the left and right edges with hot glue. Click for larger image At this point in the construction, the shake table platform is able to slide about an inch back and forth on the rods. I use a variable speed drill to shake the table. WARNING: I want to thank Greg Nowak (gregorysroom@yahoo.com) for the message that he sent on 2/22/2001 from concerning leaving the shake table running for a long period of time. Construction details are posted for two shake table designs. Damage Examples

K-5 iPad Apps to Evaluate Creating: Part Six of Bloom's Revised Taxonomy In 1948, the Swiss inventor George de Mestral returned from a hike with his dog covered in burs. After examining how nature designed these clinging bristles under a microscope, it dawned on him that a similar structure could function as a clothing fastener. The synthesis of his thoughts and prior experiences gave birth to the invention of Velcro. The process George de Mestral used to arrive at a novel solution for fastening a future generation's sneakers is exactly how Bloom defines synthesis. The merging of previous experiences with new ideas, can lead to the unlocking of the creative mind. Using a clear set of objectives, this process asks students to reorganize divergent experiences and sets of knowledge to solve problems. The Revised Taxonomy differs slightly from the original writing of Benjamin Bloom. What Are Functional Skills? Functional Skills are the essential skills needed for ENGLISH, MATHS and ICT, vital for young people and adults to participate in life, learning and work. Functional Skills feature in most educational and training choices. They are an essential, compulsory element in two main qualification routes for young people from 14 to 24; in apprenticeships and the Foundation Learning Tier, as well as being stand-alone qualifications in their own right at Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2. The development of Functional Skills is seen by the Government as essential to address employers' concerns that young people and adults are not achieving a firm enough grounding in the basics. Functional Skills strengthen and bring consistency to learning routes for young people and adults and have now replaced basic and key skills. Assessments and learning resources to prepare your learners for Functional Skills in ENGLISH, MATHS and ICT are available now from ForSkills. Functional Skills Resources

Shake It Up! Engineering for Seismic Waves Summary Students learn about how engineers design and build shake tables to test the ability of buildings to withstand the various types of seismic waves generated by earthquakes. Just like engineers, students design and build shake tables to test their own model buildings made of toothpicks and mini marshmallows. Once students are satisfied with the performance of their buildings, they put them through a one-minute simulated earthquake challenge. Engineering Connection In certain areas of the world, earthquakes are a serious concern. Educational Standards Each TeachEngineering lesson or activity is correlated to one or more K-12 science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) educational standards. All 100,000+ K-12 STEM standards covered in TeachEngineering are collected, maintained and packaged by the Achievement Standard Network (ASN), a project of JES & Co.
