Affymetrix - About Affymetrix - Investors - Press Release SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jun 22, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- A recent study conducted by global industry analysts Frost & Sullivan clarifying the state and dynamics of genomic technology adoption and utilization in the U.S. has concluded that microarray technology--the cornerstone of two decades of discovery--will remain relevant to the advancement of biomedical research and translational medicine in the future. Moreover, while excitement for next-generation sequencing (NGS) remains justifiably high, genomics research remains sustained by mainstay platforms, like those manufactured by Affymetrix, Inc. (NASDAQ:AFFX)1. The study focused on awareness, adoption plans, usage, and preferences for 15 technologies and 30 applications, and surveyed more than 300 life science researchers from six end-user segments: academic institutions/medical centers, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology companies, and labs in federal or state government, hospitals, and clinics. Pathophysiology of Human Visceral Obesity: An Update A. Heterogeneity of Obesity: Importance of Body Fat Distribution Every week a national newspaper somewhere around the globe publishes an article that has something to do with obesity, its prevalence, and the risk it carries for the health of our nations. Obesity is defined by an excess of body fat. Table 1. Health risk classification according to body mass index Although the BMI is an adequate tool to report secular trends in the prevalence of obesity at the population level (256), its limitations have left health professionals at times puzzled by the fact that obesity is quite a heterogeneous condition. A striking example of the limitations of the BMI relates to the metabolically obese, normal-weight (MONW) subject, a concept originally introduced by Ruderman et al. (482, 483). B. The development of imaging technologies such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has allowed remarkable advances in the field of body composition/adipose tissue distribution. 18 April 2013, Nature & Nurture in Nutrition, Science Cafe Wageningen April 18th 2013 Summary The contribution of a balanced diet to human health has been long recognized, and there is general agreement about which foods and supplements are “good” and “bad”. Most of our knowledge though, is based on the response of the average person, and likewise, policy, legislation and insurance are rooted in the concept of “public health”. In the last decades, technologies in genomics have spurred research into the genetic basis for differences in the response to foods and supplements among the human population.
