blog.walking-the-edit Experimental Conversations — Articles — The Paradoxes of Dimitri Kirsanoff: 'Menilmontant' Within the Avant-Garde Tradition Dimitri Kirsanoff was born Marc David Kaplan on March 6th, 1899, in Tartu, Estonia although some other sources indicate as his birth place as Riga, Latvia. He emigrated to the French capital, as did so many other Slavic artists at the time, after the Russian Revolution in 1919. In Paris, Kirsanoff studied in the École Normale de Musique and later he found a job as a musical accompanist to silent films (as a cellist, not a violinist as has been often stated) in such Parisian movie theatres as the Cluny, the Artistic or the Danton. Indeed, it was in a movie theatre that the would-be filmmaker met the woman who would play the lead in many of his future films, a young French girl working in photographic enlarging, called Nadia Sibirskaia (also spelt Sibirskaïa). A year later, during the winter of 1924, Kirsanoff and Sibirskaia shot their next film, Ménilmontant under the shooting title Les cent pas. Nadia Sibirskaia, of course, played the lead the role of the younger sister.

The declines have accelerated in recent years as manufacturing jobs have disappeared and the mortgage crisis has devastated even stable, middle-class neighborhoods. The number of abandoned or vacant homes and residential lots doubled in the past decade to nearly 80,000, more than one-fifth of the city’s housing stock, the Census Bureau reported. Concerned about the decadent state of the buildings from his home town, photographer Kevin Bauman has been working since the mid 90′s to document Detroit’s abandoned homes. 5 Ways a Filmmaker Could Use Broadcastr to Promote Their Film » Beyond the Box Office As some of you may have seen from my tweet during DIY DAYS I was impressed by Broadcastr and its capabilities. Scott Macauley, editor of Filmmaker Magazine (who was nice enough to allow me to pick his brain for a bit after the talk) had a fireside chat with Scott Lindenbaum of Broadcastr and Electric Lit. Broadcastr is a mashup (remember when those were novel?) of audio recordings and a Google Map and you can access it on the Internet, or an iPhone/iPad/Android application. From the site: “Users can take a GPS-enabled walk as stories about their surroundings stream into their headphones, like a museum tour of the entire world. It just launched recently and already they have some impressive partners. Lindenbaum talked about it as a great way for local businesses to drive traffic or to just be more interesting by having people record stories about the place. 1. Chasse au trésor Pour ceux qui durant l'été auront fait chou blanc avec leur détecteur de métal, sur les plages du littoral atlantique, il est toujours possible de se rattraper, avec le projet lancé par les éditions First. Pour la promotion d'un de leurs ouvrages, La chasse au trésor autour du monde, un jeu-concours avec une dotation de 50.000 € a été mis en place. Les énigmes se suivent et voilà l'internaute parti à la recherche d'une solution, cavalant, sans quitter sa chaise, sur Google Earth. Fin du jeu, au 31 mars prochain. Mais entre temps, l'achat du livre - 14,90 € - sera probablement nécessaire, pour arriver à déjouer les pièges, éviter les impasses, et parvenir au but suprême : 50.000 €. L'idée de profiter d'un outil en ligne de géolocalisation a plusieurs fois été tentée. My Favorite App at SXSW There are many apps on your smart phone. How many do you really use? Me: Yelp, Facebook, Twitter, Huffington Post, Lastfm, and Google maps. My 100 other ones collect dust because they don’t solve a problem or are a bad imitation. What is iTouru? iTourU is a new iPhone App that lets anyone create, discover and share what we call ‘Pocket Tours’, which have ’stops’ that are tagged to a map and include audio, text and photos about that location. These Pocket Tours can be about absolutely anything, making iTourU a platform for creativity and real world adventure. How did you come up with the idea? The idea came to me when a friend sent me a satirical tour she had made about a renaissance exhibition. So that’s what we did: built a platform for creativity and real world adventure. Who did you make this for? Good question. At the moment we’re really trying to find creative, inspiring and insightful ‘publishers’ and help them create and share amazing Pocket Tours. Which cities have the most traction?
