2010 - The Year In Film | GritFX T-Shirts Magazine Personally, I thought the first year of the new decade to be rather lacklustre as far as cinema goes. The sheer volume of reckless, morally inept comedies and action films was overwhelming. Fellow author Adam Fay said it best last year when, in his piece on Christopher Nolan’s Inception stated, “While there is no doubt that this is a standout film, the over-the-top gushing of praise strikes me to be less about the strength of the actual film and more about the pitiful films it shares multiplex space with.” Such a statement could be applied to many preceding years, but never more pertinent in the light of 2010’s bucket of trash. The Best It’s a short list, this one. Also on the list for the year would be Monsters, a film that divided its audience (those who saw it, anyway) like chocolate and cheese. This is how you’ll look after watching Skyline But the crap didn’t stop with Skyline – the Kevin Smith-directed Cop-Out came a close second. What did you say about my acting, Wadrick?

A Decade of Teen Movies The best teen movies reflect modern youth culture and alter it—they transform the vernacular, fashion, and the trajectory of the genre itself. They are original and smart (even mid-dick joke). Some are raunchy comedies, some are stark dramas, some defy classification, but all are unflinchingly honest (even mid-dick joke). Most likely to influence future filmmakers: Brick (2005) Writer-director Rian Johnson overhauled the teen genre, the noir, and blew everyone’s mind by setting this brilliant whodunit in a high school. Most likely to cause a lot of ill-advised sweater fondling: Wet Hot American Summer (2001) All right, so almost everyone in the cast is over thirty but this endlessly quotable parody of all of those late 1970s, early 1980s camp movies like Meatballs and Little Darlings is the ultimate (penis-in-vagina), dick cream coated love letter to the teen genre. Most likely to be seen as the defining moment of Mandy Moore’s acting career: Saved!

Robot Skin Can Feel Touch, Sense Chemicals, and Soak Up Solar Power When you meet your robot overlord, it may be wearing super-intelligent skin designed by a Stanford researcher--a solar-powered, super-sensitive, chemical-sampling covering that makes your meatbag covering look pathetic. Zhenan Bao is behind the advances, and the recent development centers on a stretchable solar cell system that can expand and shrink along two different axes, making it perfect for incorporation into artificial skin for robots, human prosthetic limbs, or even clothing. Bao's earlier successes with artificial skin have resulted in a highly flexible and durable material, which is part of a flexible organic-chemistry transistor, built on a thin polymer layer. When the skin is subjected to pressure, the current flowing through the transistors is modified as tiny pyramid shapes molded into the polymer layer compress, resulting in a super-sensitive transducer that can apparently detect the pressure from a house-fly's feet.
